Teaching curricula have been modified to enhance both academics and extra-curricula activities. Different learning institutions have resolved in offering modern courses in addition to the traditional courses like engineering, medicine and sciences among others. Furthermore, the current students are free to select their subjects of specializations depending on individual’s capability, unlike some 10 decades ago when had no choice but to pursue the few offered courses . The traditional colleges specialized in specific subjects, for instance; there were the engineering, law, and medicine and art schools among others (Brian, 2007). However, the modern learning institutions offer both courses but at different departments. All these factors contribute to the adoption of specific careers. Academic researchers have proven that although career selection depends on individuals trainings or education, there are chances of one picking career not related to his/her areas of study. This is because we live in a dynamic world where some skills are not necessarily offered in classes but in the practicing fields. This work is about selection of my two favorite careers. It further explains some of the factors I considered before such selections and the like challenges. 1.1 Water Engineering career Water engineering is one of my favorite careers. A water engineer is required to design and supervise implementations of water related projects like ground water explorations, waster water treatment, water supply and water metering among other responsibilities. One has to perform well in the sciences like Physics, Chemistry and mathematics to get admissions in the engineering colleges or universities. Further aspiring water engineer I have been watching engineering documentaries from YouTube among other sources. I have always admired innovations certain peculiar skills to save my county, country and the world as a whole (Broodly, 2006). My passion to be a water engineer was further triggered after watching some families in the developing nations, more so children perishing or even dying out of hunger. I watched some Christian based non-governmental organizations strive to reduce such sufferings through initiating water projects like bore hill drilling, construction of watersheds and rain and storm water harvesting among other projects. Since then, I kept reading engineering journals from the local and national libraries. I also used my smart phone to access some online materials touching on the engineering field. 1.2 Environmental consultant My second career choice is an environmental consultant. This implies providing consultancy services to companies, governmental agencies and private projects among other sectors. One requires to have attended environment management courses to qualify or undertake the career. An environmental consultant would conduct environmental impact assessment or audits to starting and ongoing projects respectively. Environment is a very important aspect in the economical development in the society since majority of raw materials in the modern industries depends on the sustainability of the environment. 2.0 Feasibility 2.1 Feasibility inWater engineering career One has to consider certain current issues before the final decision with regard to career selection. Researchers lament that the majority of graduates end up selecting wrong career choices due to lack of current considerations. We live in a generation where the traditional well paying careers may be not that fruitful in this modern world. One must consider the feasibility of a certain career, water and environmental engineering career are favored by several factors, in terms of its life span among other factors. It is not wise to select a career that will flourish for a shorter span and die off. For instance, several secretaries are forced to move to other careers due to the changes in the modern institutions’ style of administrations. We live in a generation where one uses his/her computer to organize all office chores that a sectary would have done. Furthermore, we are shifting to the e-management like E-HRM (Electronic human resource management). Water engineering is a field or profession to remain provided there is human and animals on this planet earth. Water is a basic commodity that man can never survive without water. The feasibility of the career can also be indicated by allocations of huge amounts in the national or county budgets for water project implementations. Engineering is a long serving career apart from that of law (Singer, 2004). Engineers are have not specific retire age because, it is believed that engineers are at their peak at old age. This is due to wide experience of practice. Several Engineers may voluntarily leave governmental sectors due to old age and establish their own consulting firms. This keeps they committed even in their old age. When I finally decide to take the career, I will ensure I interact with several engineers who have succeeded in their practice. I will ensure none of my doubts or questions in the field is left unanswered. 2.2Feasibility in Environmental consultant career Environmentalists’ role cannot be ignored in the national economy. Several international organizations like United Nations environment Program (UNEP) among other held an international summit in Brazil and advocated some international environmental laws. Currently, almost all nations ensure some environmental pre studies are conducted before major projects are executed. This is to ensure a balance is strike between development and environmental conservation. Environmental impact assessment studies are conducted by registered and qualified environmentalists or consultants. Environmentalists also partner with other professionals to promote the global economy. For instance, ground water exploration activities rely on certain environmental principles. The laws require industries to conduct environmental audits. Here the environmentalists conduct some surveys to ensure the respective industries adhere to the environmental laws and conditions. 3.0 Flexibility 3.1 Flexibility in Water Engineering It is advantageous to have a career that can enable adopt different duties should the need arise. A water engineer has several skills due to the diversity of the field. It also has a wide teaching curriculum to produce whole round graduates. A typical water engineer can handle several water exploration and supply projects due to the nature of training they undergo. Water engineers can work in different fields or companies apart from those associated with water. For instance, a typical experienced water engineer can work in the mining fields or companies (Osipow, 2009). This is because they are trained on different mining or drilling techniques. Furthermore, water engineering curriculum includes geological studies which are majorly applied in the mining practice. One may lose his /her water engineering job and get recruited in the mining, survey and GIS fields among others. Several companies would prefer recruiting water engineers to manage several related departments out of the wide scope of their knowledge. Water is a necessity in both developed and developing nations in terms of economic and human survival. Some nations like Egypt ensure that its political leaders have water knowledge to enable them make wise decisions with regard of water conservations. Water engineers can also defect to environmental fields or companies. A typical engineer would always be equipped with environmental skills since the law requires that Environmental impact assessment studies to ensure implementation of water projects do not comprise the sustainability of the environment. 3.2 Flexibility in environmental career Environmentalists would always have several options to venture, should one lose his/job. First, environmentalists have a good master in social sciences. Social environmental assessment studies require the environmentalist to understand social and cultural set up of a certain society. These include the reactions of a certain society towards a proposed development project. A few individuals may be against the project on cultural grounds (Brown, 2007). The government would always respect the cultural implications in the society and would always ensure ‘human peace’ take precedence over economical developments. Environmentalist can also manage some tourist company because they have the social, nature and climate knowledge, and these are some of the factors that determine the success of the tourist sectors. Environmentalist can be secure employment in travel industries and advice on weather patterns. With the insistence by authorities that industries comply with a stringent array of rules on waste management, it has become a necessity that there be an increase in individuals with a skill set particular to solving such issues. This lies in the field of environmental science. Furthermore, with the effects of Global warming being upon us more than any time in history, there have been sharp increases in frequency of occurrence of events that can be best described as environmentally disastrous. Such happenings include floods, hurricanes, and cyclones and so on. When these catastrophes hit, the world is left exposed and vulnerable and is in need of individuals with expertise in all things environmental. Such skill can help boost efforts of prevention of fatalities and loss of property, through the knowledgeable administration of drills and public education on what to do in the event of a natural disaster. 4.0 Competition 4.1 Lack of competition in Water Engineering career Competition is another important factor in choosing a certain career. Competition implies the estimate number of practitioners willing to recruited or already working in a certain field or sector. It determines job security and salary packages among other factors. There are limited engineers in the entire world. This is attributed by several factors, first, a majority of students opt to pursue humanity or art courses and not engineering which is not only complex and long. The atypical humanities course will last for about four or three years while that of engineering takes about 5 to 6 years. Engineers are few hence have high chances of securing employment in the governmental or private sector. Secondly; some sectors or companies prefer engineers in the managerial positions. They lament that a typical engineer is more likely to be flexible and learn fast. They pay them huge packages to attract them from the engineering companies. 4.2 Lack of competition in Environmental consultant career There are few registered environmentalist in the entire globe since it is one of the new fields in the career arena. Environmental courses are offered in few universities and colleges, upon the government approvals. However, few students opt to specialize in such courses because it’s dull, time consuming and complex. This is in comparison to the more appealing courses of the present time which include engineering based studies, science and business. There has been a tendency over the years of mankind being reluctant to facing the challenges developing as a result of gross mismanagement of the environmental issues. As a result it was considered a meager accomplishment for one to pursue higher education in the field of environmental science. This attitude is however experiencing a change with recent crusades against pollution, practices that promote global warming and desertification and also the growing need for individuals with knowledge on environmental disaster management. However this is just the beginning, the numbers of those interested in this field are still low. 5.0 Conclusion Good career choice is the ultimate benefit of entire education system. There are basic factors that one must consider before making a specific career choice. They include flexibility, competition and the feasibility aspect of a certain career. Some careers look attractive, but if chosen blindly, one may end up jobless. The issue of career choice has become a government concern. It is the role of each national and county government to ensure its graduates venture in sustainable or productive careers. Water engineering and environmental consultancy is proven to be one of the most productive careers in both developed and developing nations. Water engineering is one of the latest branches of traditional civil engineering and it strengthens developmental strategies since clean or safe water is the basis of major developmental projects (Morr, 2005). Environmental consultancy on the other hand is the bridge between major developmental strategies and the actual benefit. Major international environmental agencies indicate any developmental project without proper environmental conservation technique is short span. These career can be chosen by any one provided some basics. The majority of water engineers and environmental consultants are first degree graduates but with concrete practical experience from reputable firms or companies. References Brians, M. (2007).
