Part A: Understanding Primary Research Complete before composing primary research questions Read Understanding Primary Research, (2) An Introduction to Qualitative Research Interviews , and (3) Designing a Survey before you begin writing your Primary Research questions, which are due by class time on November 10th. Also, if you have not yet done so or need a refresher, you would benefit greatly from viewing the Primary Research Presentation. Part B: Composing Primary Research Questions Due by class time Activity 1: Describing Primary Research Plans As you started to do in your research proposals, you need to determine why you are conducting primary research and what purpose your research questions serve.

Ultimately, when you finish this activity, you should understand the role your primary research plays in your Final Project. For both of your primary research sources, provide a description that answers the following: 1. What are your goals for this portion of your primary research (establishing problem, determining solutions, testing feasibility, etc)? What role does this primary research play in your Final Project? My goals for doing this primary research are determining that there is indeed a vandalism problem and that there are not enough solutions so far from the University and the police, so I need to find better solutions for it, and finding feasible recommendations for an anti-vandalism recommendations report.

This primary research will help me determine solutions to vandalism and in finding the most feasible option. 2. How will the results of this research improve/go beyond what is available elsewhere? I believe that this research will improve the campus’ knowledge on vandalism’s prevalence and what target audiences think about the effectiveness of existing solutions. I also believe that this will motivate stakeholders into identifying and supporting new solutions to vandalism by finding offender-centered and environment-related solutions. 3. How will you accomplish your goals or answer your research questions?

Please provide details about your chosen research method (i.e. survey, interview, usability testing). I will accomplish my goals by ensuring that I interview the right audiences who can give me relevant information about vandalism efforts in the campus and how they can be improved. I will interview three senior students, one teacher, Gloria Aparicio Blackwell, Director of Community Engagement, Andrea Goodwin, Director of Student Conduct, and MPO Robert Jenshoej of the campus police. Besides this interview, I will also conduct a survey in class regarding the prevalence, motivations, and resolutions to vandalism in the campus.

I will ask another teacher and student first for the pilot testing of the interview and survey questions to improve my instruments’ usability, validity, and reliability. 4. Who will you be surveying/interviewing/testing for this portion of your primary research? Have you contacted those individuals? If so, how did it go? If not, why not? As mentioned, I will interview three senior students, one teacher, Gloria Aparicio Blackwell, Director of Community Engagement, Andrea Goodwin, Director of Student Conduct, and MPO Robert Jenshoej of the campus police.

Besides this interview, I will also conduct a survey in class regarding the prevalence, motivations, and resolutions to vandalism in the campus. I have contacted only Mr. Jenshoe so far and he said that he is willing to do the interview. I also have access to three senior students and one teacher. However, I have not yet contacted Ms. Blackwell and Ms. Goodwin because I have not yet refined my interview questions. 5. What are your own beliefs/attitudes/ideas about the answers to your research questions?

How did you prevent your own biases from influencing your questions and their phrasing? I believe that I simply want to know more about campus vandalism and how it can be deterred. I prevented my own biases from affecting my questions and phrasing by avoiding leading questions and ensuring that my statements and questions are objective. 6. How will you incorporate your findings into your Final Project? I will incorporate my findings into my Final Project by determining the prevalence of vandalism and current school and police efforts against it and finding the best solutions among the offered recommendations from the participants.

In other words, my findings will serve as my rationale and content for my anti-vandalism recommendation report. Activity 2: Writing Primary Research Questions Having provided a rationale for each of your research plans, please compose two (2) separate sets of primary research questions (5+ questions for each set). When finished, submit to the Assignment 5 Folder in Google Drive, in the folder that corresponds to your section (naming the document LastName_Section_Primary1). Helpful Resources: Introduction to Primary Research (Pages 162-168 focus on question creation) Asking Research Questions (Explains how research bias sneaks into your questions)
