Medical Support Assistant: Knowledge, Skills and Ability I have no formal training on medical terminology, but I am knowledgeable on the basic terms derived from the usual regular interaction with medical practitioners. In addition, during my stint with the US Army, we had to learn first aid as part of our basic training. We were taught to identify basic sicknesses and injuries and administer corresponding first aid treatment. Having been skilled in the military service, I have been trained to perform tasks in a disciplined and systematic way. Also, I have gained experience compiling information and preparing reports during my previous job as Assistant General Manager. I am highly analytical and systematic. I am extremely productive in a high volume and stressful environment. In addition, I am capable to anticipate new challenges, and to lead and manage changes in situations and issues. I am focused and disciplined, and very results-oriented. I am well organized, and I know how to plan my time wisely. With these, I am confident that I can do the tasks and responsibilities correctly A. Knowledge of  regulations and local policies regarding entitlement to health care and benefits, outpatient programs; ancillary services and the Compensation & Pension process in order to advise veterans, staff, family members, and others when questions or problems are encountered. From my past research works for academic purposes, and from my most recent job assignment as a Work Study Participant under Veteran Affairs Management, I was able to gain knowledge on some of the legislations involving health care benefits for family members. For instance, I have knowledge on Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964; applicable affirmative action obligations; Fair Labor Standards Act; Family and Medical Leave Act; workplace injury and Workers Compensation laws, rules, and regulations; among others. I have acquired all these knowledge through my university degree which allowed us to tackle topics on personnel regulation, the rule of law, and inherent powers doctrine and supporting case law guide Human Resources policy and practices. In addition, my past job as Work Study Participant exposed me to the responsibilities of assisting Veteran Affairs (VA) beneficiaries (service persons, veterans, reservists, eligible dependents) with any VA claim or VA issue, and I had distribute information and assistance to VA beneficiaries and veterans regarding programs such as Wagner Peyser and WIA for which these persons have mandated preference. My good communication skills would enable me to understand my clientele’s concerns and address their concerns correspondingly. Furthermore, being highly analytical, I consider myself capable of engaging in a healthy discussion regarding the aforementioned policies and legislations. I also have the capacity to conduct research on the items that need clarification. B. Ability to manage time in order to assess priorities in workload, telephone calls and general office activities. I am very familiar with office ethics and protocol, having been employed in two companies prior to this application. I have been trained to be capable of developing, planning, and implementing short and long range goals and projects During my stint as Assistant General Manager, I have performed tasks that are focused on Inventory and Calculating Services. I have been trained to perform jobs that require quantitative results. During this, time I was able to design and implement systems that help to collect, maintain, correct, and analyze data. For around four years, I have worked in an environment that allowed me to grow in terms of management, inventory control, bookkeeping principles and practices. Because of this, I have developed skills appropriate for a multi-tasking employee, wanting to maximize the time given to achieve maximum results. I give utmost important to time. As such, I have the ability to maximize each minute to ensure productivity. I believe in time management and I apply this in every task that I need to undertake, making me very well organized and results-oriented. I have the ability to identify priorities, and list down responsibilities according to urgency and importance. C. Ability to communicate orally and in writing with people from a variety of backgrounds and varying levels of understanding. I have a background on communication theories from my past subjects in Human Resource Management course. Basically, I understand what it needs to be understood as a speaker. There are many ways to convey our messages to our audience. Further, as a Human Resource Graduate, I have basic background on psychology. I know how to interpret human behavior, consequently identifying the right method to get my message across. I am proficient in the use of personal computers and related software applications to communicate oral and in writing with supervisors, coworkers, and customers from a variety of backgrounds and varying levels of understanding. Therefore, I am capable to create, compose and edit written materials. Also, I am able to clearly communicate factual and procedural information orally and in writing. In addition, I have also completed 12 semester hours of writing courses in college level and 6 semester hours of writing courses in university level. I also completed general English Language Training conducted at Defense Language Institute at Lackland Air Force Base (The Defense Language Institute (DLI) is a United States Department of Defense (DOD) educational and research institution, which provides linguistic and cultural instruction to the Department of Defense, other Federal Agencies and numerous and varied other customers. The DLI is responsible for the Defense Language Program, and the bulk of the Defense Language Institute's activities involve educating DOD members in assigned languages. I have above average communication skills. I have gained this through constant interface with various levels such as clients, managers, skilled workers, veterans and other parties. Having served veterans as indicated in my resume, I have developed the skills of understanding their grievances at their level. This previous job required me to coordinate and cascade pertinent information to all parties concerned. This includes addressing their concerns as well. Good communication skills, both written and oral are necessary to do this effectively. Program details must be relayed effectively to achieve the desired results. I have the ability to adapt to any situation or personality that I am required to deal with. I could adjust my level of communication to fit that of my client. Also, as a member of any team, I like to be a team player. Sharing and cooperation are keywords in all functions. For these reasons, I am able to effectively communicate with supervisors, co-workers, and customers to provide accurate information in a timely manner. Read More
