Interior Architecture Reviews Interior Architecture Exhibition Review Portrait of a Marriage,with a Star Turn for a Townhouse Local Context This exhibition is called: Portrait of a Marriage, with a Star Turn for a townhouse. The artists are Viv Albertine and Liam Gillick who play a married couple in the exhibition. The main director of this exhibition is Joanna Hog and the exhibition took place in an ultramodern townhouse in London. Description of the Work Viv and Liam are portrayed as married couples in their 50s. In their house, the living room, the couple is planning on selling the house. Viv is seated on a maroon cushioned three-seater sofa which is placed facing the window that is facing the street. Beside her on the left is the back-door leading to the balcony of the house. From the door, the wall to the left is one made with spaces that necessitate aeration of the house. The wall is made of slits of spaces from up to down. Again the wall is not insulated against noise from the streets. There’s a brown elegant office chair which stands on a single seat just in front of Viv, to the left. Liam on the other hand is staged standing in front of the wall to the leftward side of Viv holding the leaves of a flower which is placed at the corner that connects the wall with the door. The door is made of glass from top to bottom with one side fixed and partitioned into two. The other side is left flexible and able to open and it leads to the backyard and the balcony of the house. There’s a table in front of Viv, and this table seem to be made of melamine on the top and stands on four steel stands. Viv is deeply in thought, and we’re told she’s thinking about selling the house which she treasures so much. However, when she’s left alone in the house, she is irritated by the sounds and noises of ambulances, sirens, vehicles and street voices. She therefore sits with her left arm rested on the left arm of the chair and her left hand holding her cheek. Her left leg is also folded on the sofa and held by her right hand. On the other hand, Liam is looking at the beautiful leaves of the flower which makes the interior of the house even more attractive. Last but not least, the floor is made of smooth arrangement of wood that seem to have been furnished well. The house is attractive, though it is not fitted with insulators against street noise. Art Historical/ Theoretical Contextualization The art here represents a modern kind of structure with modern living style. The interior architecture of the house takes a modern finishing hence fits well within the modern architectural context. The aeration of the walls and the elegancy of the furniture that the house is fitted with show clearly that it fits in the modern context. Information about the Artist(s) Viv Albertine is an alumna of the rock groups the slits while Liam Gillick is a well regarded conceptual artist. The film gives us the notion that, Viv is a high-strung and passive aggressive and an impatient person while Liam is portrayed as a bit of a bully. Readings / Interpretations of the Work: This work is all about a nice interior architecture of a house which is only spoilt by the fact that it is not insulated from street noise although it is situated in the streets. This issue makes the couple childless couple decide to embark on a plan to sell the beautiful house even though the wife treasures it so much. A good interior architecture could have taken into consideration the fact that the house in situated in the street that is noisy and therefore requires an insulator against noise. Observations and Assessments of the work The work is great. The finishing of the house and the fitting with elegant furniture presents it as a good work with its aesthetic value. The slit window which covers the whole of the wall’s frame is a sign of a new design that is mostly used in areas where the weather is hot for aeration purposes. Interior Architecture Exhibition Review 2 Francois Halard Local Context This exhibition is by a French Photographer who has done amazing work shown in pages of Vanity Fair and Vogue magazines. This artist is best known for shooting fashionable interiors and the main curator of the exhibition is known as David Hutchinson. Description of Work The exhibition represents a beautiful cut off an ocean or a water mass that has small islands and mountain ranges by the bank. Connecting to the ranges is a cliff to the side of the ocean and flat trimmed ridges on the other side. The two islands in the ocean look so static with one being flat and short while the other being very tall and raged. The waters are cool and they join the beautiful skies on the far end. Art Historical / Theoretical Contextualization This is a kind of art which comes to represent all sorts of generations. This is because the ocean was there before, it is there and it will be there. However, theoretically, the art in its own way conveys the relationship that nature has with all that forms it. It depicts how the ocean, rock, sky, land and vegetation connect and interrelate to one another. Information about the artist Francois Halard, the French photographer has his work stapled in the pages of Vogue and Vanity Fair and has built his renowned shooting stylish, often decorous interiors. Readings and Interpretations of the Work Simply the work is all about the relationship of the ocean, the sky, rocks, land and vegetation. It shows that all these have a peaceful coexistence that plays an important part in contribution of life continuity. This is what should be emulated by us human beings. Observations, Assessment and Critique The artist uses black color everywhere, a part from for the skies, in order to represent the features that are on the ground. Black represents the soils, hence those things that are on it. It is therefore a brilliant idea to use the color. The blackness may also portray the fact that the art was done in the evening. This, according to the writer, is no place for the faint of heart or the faint of hue. The Beverly Hills style maven has nothing at all shy about her as well as her extroverted sense of color. Kelly is greatly inspired by the designs from the 1920s to the 1980s. The book was written in 2009 and considered to be one of the well-read architectural books. She brings out her melded Hollywood Regency with Modernism, how splashing rooms can be made of intense color that brings out the classical details of indoor architecture. She demonstrates the use of reveling in opulent materials and as she pumps up the scale to produce her voluptuous brand of glam. Her richly illustrated book Hue takes the readers into her various premises including her restaurant, residential places, and hotels. All these are high toned and tonally saturated with the intense color make-ups. We are also taken through her ever evolving former set decorator character as she fashions scenes of sculptures and tabletop vignettes. These nearly represent the installation of art for domestic realms. The book tells us how her character of breaking rules with colors has become the pillar of her successes in the industry. She is also described to be perfectly capable of working within a palette of neutrals. Looking at the living room, there are oversized elements such as mirrors, Roman bust, and checkerboard coffee tables; that clearly evoke the viewers’ appeals to beauty. The beauty is covered up by the postmodern barrel chairs and leather sofas of deep blue colors. The film is mostly about a university graduate (Ben Braddock) who gets trapped having a love affair with the lusty wife (Anne Bancroft) who is his father’s law partner. He does this within a series of cloyingly smart mid-‘60s interiors. Most of these interiors were created on soundstages by set designer George R. Nelson. However, the exteriors were made using several Southern California’s landmark. These included the ambassador Hotel. The film points clearly how the young graduate falls in love with the interior architecture of the 1960s and at the same time, the film is made to turn out to make such beauty to attract the lusty woman to the woman graduate. The film has several strengths including the fact that, it is used to portray the beauty of the early times. It is very important to note how strong the king of wood that was used to make the interior architecture was and such cannot go without mention in the film. The white carpet gives the house its theme while it matches with the color of the walls and the drawers. However, the space in the interior of the room is much wasted as there is too much space that has been left unoccupied hence diluting the beauty that has been created in the interior. On t o the contribution of the film in developing public knowledge, the film depicts how the old and forgotten kinds of designs and architectural work can also be put into use in the current world to give an interior aesthetic value. It also gives the knowledge of a beauty in the interior that attracts the beauty of a woman against all odds. This gives the work a lot of relevance in the current society as it combines both modernism and post modernism in portraying aesthetic value of an interior. The relevance of this film to the field of architecture is something that does not need any explanation. Considering the fact that the young graduate is attracted to a woman, she finds the same beauty that is in that woman to also be in the beauty of the interior of the room which sets the pace in an attempt of the modernism and postmodernism blending in order to give a colorful setting. While creating the theme of the interior, it is clear that the design and the interior architecture here have much to do with the theme created in the interior.
