It is generally completed through the combined efforts of various categories of form producers such as sign makers and printers. The role of graphic design is to express definite in formation to a specific audience. Graphic design can also be used as an expression for certain disciplines. These fields may be centered on communication and visual art. Visual art concentrates on words, symbols and imagery. Graphic design is applied in both print and electronic media. A graphic designer also expresses their ideas through various designs. Creativity is without any doubt the most essential part of graphic design. Designers ought to pay great attention to quality proposals that serve certain functions such as coordinating the graphic functions. Within the context of graphic design, there are various definitions of creativity. A creative procedure should be essentially a new invention which is basically a process that is new to others. Creativity also means the ability of bringing into existence. By this definition, we still refer to the first instance where there was involvement of creation of a new idea or a system that is unique in nature based on the innovative idea. The process of creativity can also encompass digging deep onto an existing process and trying to find out an idea that had not been detected previously. This idea can be a concept that will be used or can be used as an improvement of the first or previous concept. It is hence the work of the graphic designer to incorporate creativity into his work. The concept of design is defined in various ways. It is defined as a thought, the type of thought referred to as insight. It is the synapse of the mental element of a human being that sees the probable connection between possibility and problem. The thought that sees improvement amid inefficiency or capacity for order in the midst of chaos. Design is also referred to as intuition, the subconscious form of a thought that leads to a deeper sense of meaning regularly in the noticeable absence of rational confirmation. It is an insight that tells us what we are up to. It is the gut feeling that often underlies our efforts to carry out rational analysis. Graphic design has had several implications in our normal day to day lives. Graphic design companies and designers have become more effective in the market through differentiation strategies because of the end products. History of Graphic Design Despite the fact that Graphic Design as an art has a comparatively current history, with the title originally thought up by William Addison Dwiggins. Activities touching on graphic design extend to the earliest history of mankind. Graphic design can be traced back to the caves of Lascaux and has expanded to modern day printing. Graphic designs lengthy has been mixed and varied, as it has consisted of various forms of the art ranging from adverts to fine art (Heller & Elinor, 2000). The distinction between the two is that advertising art mainly concentrates on marketing of goods and services whereby fine art deals with graphic design as form of art. The pace of adoption of graphic Design was accelerated by the invention of printing and printing designs. From the days of Chinese woodblock printing, graphic design has evolved over time to also include book designs. The surfacing and thriving of the design industry further catapulted the role of graphic design into mainstream applications. Publishers made a killing generating books of grand stylistic elegance and sold them to the rich for a premium. Publishers such as Morris Addison confirmed that there was a thriving market for graphical designed works. This later assisted in the setting up of the further designs and from fine art (Eskilson, 2007). Applications of Graphic Design Graphic designs is used in enhancing the illustrative appearance of wordings. Graphic designs are used to pass information between users and the author of the message. An example of where graphic design is used is in road signs among other places and applications. It can also assist in the sale of both goods and services via valuable use of imagery. It is related to products and aspects of organizational distinctiveness like logos, insignia, and content. Jointly these are classified as branding. This classification has gradually developed into significant organizational functions. This includes other wide variety of services that exist in the field of graphic design. It is important to note that graphic design is easily confused with corporate identity. While the expressions are frequently employed interchangeably, branding is rigorously connected to the identification mark or trademarking of goods and services. This is different from corporate identification which can have a wider denotation involving the constitution and philosophy of an organization. Graphic designers frequently work in teams and in coordination with other associatse to work organizational branding projects. Graphic designers often work on trademarks which are described as signs thatare already in use or intended to be used to make a distinction of commodities dealt with or provided during trade by another person or entity. Moreover, a trademark is defined as an idiom, a pictogram or a word that distinguish a particular product from another. Examples of trademark which are well known globally are such as coca-cola, Pepsi, and Microsoft among others. Trademark is therefore indispensable in enabling the user market his/her goods and services to the buyer who will easily categorize them (Quentin, 2007). In some situations, protection of trademark can go beyond to include not only phrases, words and symbols, but also other features of a product such as its packaging or appearance. For example, coca-cola bottle has a unique shape which portrays its identity feature. These features are described as ?trade dress? and are protected if other products create confusion and deception on the buyer when purchasing the product. The trademark helps the consumer to easily identify the source of a given product and thus vary essentials in the market. By easy identification of product, trademark also encourages the manufacturer to increase reserves on the quality of the products. Some terminologies are used synonymously with trademark; these terms include marks, brands and logos. Trademark may however include any device, brand, label, name, signature, word numerical, packaging, colour or a combination of colour, smell, sound, movement, shape of goods and any combination that is capable of distinguishing the products and services of one company from another. It should have graphical representation that apply to the merchandise and services it is registered for (Quentin, 2007). There are several specialized types of trademarks which are; collective trademarks, defensive trademarks and certification trademarks. A popular trademark used to identify goods and services rather than differentiate the products is known as generic zed trademark, this will be expounded further later. Graphic designers also work on manuals which are intended to present school topics. These manuals have plans and illustrations which exemplify hypothesis and drawings. A regular case this application is in the education of anatomy. This is usually done via drawings of the human body. Graphic design goes a long way making data more readable and understandable when it comes to education Graphic design is employed in the entertainment industry. Most notably graphic design is used in decorating the different scenes . From movie covers clothing graphic design is used coming up with better and creative ways of expressing individuality. Role of Graphic design Graphic design can be viewed as an art whereby is just like any other type of employment but the difference is that it is embedded in an individual and it is not transferable to other people. Art plays a critical role in life because it enables people to view human condition and the world from a different perspective and by doing so it helps in seeing a hidden truth that would have been rather difficult to see and understand in the world. Artists use their talents to gather and project questions that force human beings to reason. In this regard, art plays a major role in economic, political and social environments. It is therefore imperative to take into consideration the fact that without arts, it would be cumbersome to report on issues that if reported out rightly would raise controversy and conflicts among different camps. Without art, it would also be difficult to express hard and harsh opinions in a way that does not generate conflict and disintegration in the society. From the above arguments, art is unquestionably part and parcel of our society . (Sheena, 2009). Relation between Graphic design and other types of Design Typography: Typography is the art, craft and techniques of type design. Type foundries shaped the history of visual communication, because they brought about the simplicity in relaying ideas through visual display by two dimensional images. Man has primarily visualized ideas through type writing, which is the visualization of what is spoken. Communication is achieved through the use of words. The essence of communication was therefore found in typing. From as early as the advent of the printing press, facilitation of the circulation of printed information is the second most important thing that emerged after the advent of printed information itself. Type foundries grew after demand for type on publishing and print services. Web Design: Web design is a field that has changed lives and has had a great impact in the information technology arena and the ways in which information has been conveyed by various individuals, corporate scenes and institutions. A web site is a specially designed page that usually has information on a particular subject or company or even personal profile. A web site is informative and it?s usually used to disburse information to a particular group. As it is usually intended for people?s eyes a web site should be very well designed so as the person navigating through it does not get bored and will spend his/her time to get the best out of that site. Both types of design are interested in the display of visuals to the end user or audience. Famous Graphic Designers David Carson David Carson rose to fame in the eighties and nineties due to his work in type face designs. He contrasted all principles of the time. He further grew more broadly famous as an individual who was independent and creative at the same time. Not only were these his qualities, he was also triumphant in what he did. David is credited with coming up with his own identification signature which was recognized through his works (Pipes, 2005). Giambattista Bodoni Giambattista Bodoni (1740 - 1813) was an Italian graphic designer. Bodoni is credited with coming up with the Bodoni design which is widely used today. As obstinate as he was, Bodoni was single-mindedly obsessed with his art. It doesn?t take much effort to realize that the artist cared less about what others thought of him or how famous he was, despite the fortune that surrounded him (Pipes, 2005). Neville Brody Neville Brody (April 23, 1957) is a British graphic designer, who grew in popularity in the eighties. His works were noted in early magazines where he worked as an art designer. He later went on to start the research studio, where many graphic designers have plied their trade. He is also recognized as a cofounder of font works which is also credited with discovering and nurturing new talent in the field of graphic design. (Pipes, 2005). References Eskilson, S. (2007).
