Fudgee stood out among the rest of the litter due to her remarkable talent: She could climb two flights of average-stepped residential stairs just to be with me. From the first time she climbed such a formidable task as a young pup, my affection has been directed to her.

Fudgee had such notably noticeable facial expressions as a young pup. She would look at you as if always begging for mercy. Her cute little eyes are virtually obliterated from the shaggy and unruly hair. She opens her mouth to show the tiny red tongue while unceasingly wagging her tail. When confined to a pet cage with her siblings, I noticed early on that whenever I would come out from my room and pass by, she was the only one awake, staring at me – as if there was no sleepy bone in her being. I recognized then, that there must be something special about this pup. I observed this when I worked on my special place at home.

I usually spend my leisure time at a loft overlooking our house’s terrace where my laptop is strategically situated. As soon as I start to climb the stairs, Fudgee is right behind me. She would snuggle comfortably at my feet while I navigate the Internet for email messages or respond to comments from friends on my Facebook page. Sometimes it takes me just a short time to access social networking sites; but most often, it takes me longer as there are academic requirements to comply with. Regardless of the time frame, Fudgee stays put at my side – satisfied with the fact that she is nestled close to me rather than subjected to her mother’s arrogant stance. As early as these puppies’ teeth emerged, Mahogany stopped nurturing and feeding them. I think that is one of the reasons why Fudgee chose me as her surrogate mother. I am the one personally attending to her feeding and bathing needs.

One time, I had to rush downstairs at the urgent calling of my mother. There was a registered mail addressed to me and therefore I had to sign the registry receipt for proper acknowledgment. As I became enthused in determining the contents of the letter, in which my mother was also particularly interested, we started to enter a congenial conversation that led us to the dining table to take some snacks and drinks. It was a fairly drizzly afternoon with the winds gently blowing through the garden’s shrubs and trees. All the while, the registered mail was just a promotional solicitation from a small organization that got my name and address through the local shopping mall. I remembered answering some brochure of some kind, but never thought that the organization would further pursue me as a potential client.

When I got to remember what I was doing, more than 30 minutes had lapsed. As I climbed the first flight of stairs, I already got sight of Fudgee, patiently waiting on top of a nearby table where Shy forced her way through the small hole of a steel-barred grill parallel to the place she usually snuggles to sleep. I saw her facial expression turn from mere fright to delight the moment she saw me. She did not even attempt to bark or summon me to rescue her from her predicament. She must be wondering how she could climb down the table from a considerable height, given her small and fragile frame. I immediately took her to my loving embrace and kissed her profusely as a token of my regrets for having forgotten her. Although she had the talent to climb the stairs – apparently, it would still take time for her to learn the proper technique of going down. From that moment on, I never forgot to take her with me as I went down these flights of stairs to wherever destination I planned to go. We were like sugar and cream, butter and bread, or spoon and fork. If any of my family members see me, automatically they would predict that Fudgee is right behind, or beside me – waiting patiently for my next move.     Read More
