Similarly, Conan Doyle had a leading detective persona in his books known as Sherlock Holmes. In addition, Auguste Duplin, was Edgar’s Allan Poe’s chief detective character whose experiences brought about by the fascination with the crime stories. These writers had unique narrative techniques to bring out their characters, structures plots and importantly create suspense. However, the writing styles of the three writers were different in their approaches. Chandler introduced a new approach that was dissimilar from the set conventions of the genre of detective literature.

The traditional approaches of detective stories were using a lawless plot, witty characters and sharp dialogue to amaze the readers. Poe and Doyle were using these methods in he construction of their characters and plots. However, Chandler’s broke this trend and his lead characters were not lively and witty as Sherlock or Duplin. Interestingly, he would conduct his investigations alone and was highly dependent on his skills to solve the crimes. Marlowe was an honest and incorruptible officer who sought to provide justice for his clients. Due to these qualities, he seems to disregard involvement of other individuals as assistants since they lack his principles. In these investigative endeavors, he observes death, murder and other forms of crime that occur within his surroundings. Despite the intensity of these crimes, Marlowe maintains his integrity in undertaking his investigative responsibilities.

For example, the character is seen as relentless in his pursuance of the truth since his effort in pursuing the truth surpasses his pay. Eddie Mars is the enemy of Marlowe since he has all the characters that Marlowe disputes. Eddie’s traits include racketeering, blackmailing and gambling as some of his major tendencies. Marlowe describes Mars as a murderer who assigns a third party to execute this indecent intention. Further, he goes to explain this fact to Mona Mars, Eddie Mars’s wife. Mars and Marlowe’s relationship was conflicting since they represent the exact opposites of the characters in the book.

Mars is the antagonist of the story and has connectivity with the execution of numerous crimes in the region, while Marlowe is the protagonist who reflects the hero personality in the story. Eddie Mar’s comes out as a ruthless individual who goes to extreme lengths to safeguard his interests. General Sternwood
