It also explicates Leiden; their Calvinistic religion and politics, their fight to achieve and get through New England via the wintry sea. There was a relationship between Wampanoag and pilgrims since they had lived together in the region. The novel demonstrates how the pilgrims got themselves involved with the natives. The mutuality was that Wampanoag provided teachings on how to survive in New England climatic conditions, while pilgrims put up a way to Wampanoag to justify themselves as a regional super power.

Some people, such as Massasoit and the Wampanoag leaders, benefited from the coalition. This coalition with the Wampanoag also enabled Massasoit to attain superiority over the other New England folks. As other individuals, especially the English settlers, continued to immigrate to the pilgrims’ region, tension began to accelerate. These tensions were heightened by inter-tribal and complex relations, as well as the increase of the English population. Conflicts, wars and genocides ensued that the Massasoit gained recognition of the English speaking population.

In accordance to Wampanoag, they sold their property and land to the settlers, leading to the truce among them (65). As the region developed further, a new tension ensued as a result of the economic competition. The settlers were persuaded, especially William Bradford who was the governor at that particular time, that the Supreme Being should show displeasure at times. This made economic shift imbalances that led to the bloodiest conflict in the history of the region - the King Metacom war. Metacom drew followers from the English settlers creating tension that culminated into the war in which nearly eight percent of English speakers in Plymouth were involved.

The story is extremely significant within the context of the early settlement of New England. It opens an arousing historical adventure that prompts one to rethink the early American history. For instance, it narrates the King
