of the English of the Concerned 5 September Sandel- Doing the Right Thing ` In Doing the Right Thing Sandel refers to three approaches towards justice that are specifically associated with the requirements of promoting welfare, assuring respect for freedom and individual liberty and promoting virtue. Sandel tends to elaborate on the concepts of moral dilemma and moral argument. Moral dilemma primarily pertains to deciding upon the best moral choice when it comes to selecting between two options, both of which morally seem to be right and valid.

In contrast, moral argument is the logical discourse between the moral choice that an individual makes and the essential principles on which that choice is based. Sandel presents an array of moral dilemmas, some of which are real while the others tend to be hypothetical. In that context the moral dilemmas presented by Sandel culled from the real life are more interesting, especially the moral dilemma regarding the awarding of Purple Heart to the veterans suffering from psychological injuries.

This is because such moral dilemmas tend to take the collective social conscience to another level of debate and makes it grapple with issues that are hitherto not considered or are ignored. In that context a discussion on ethics is necessary because the democratic societies do time and again have to deal with issues and make decisions pertaining to those issues, which have an element of virtue and morality attached to them. Sandel’s discussion of ethics tends to relate to Weston’s discussion of ‘counterfeit ethics’ as both the discussions tend to delve on the intense debate and moral counterarguments imminent on the ethical reasons backing practical decision making.
