Extract of sample "Developing Writing through Reading, Talking and Listening"

Despite being conversant with the English language, I still had a few issues with grammar especially the organization of sentences during writing in order to communicate the intended information as clearly as possible. The reading and writing assignments I have undertaken during the semester have equipped me with the skills required in searching for information on specific topics. They also helped me in reading more widely to get a broader perspective of any given topic.  Presenting the ideas in writing requires that one follows a given citation style consistently.

During my writing assignments, I have been able to develop my skills in citation styles as well. Comparing my current status in reading and writing to an earlier time before English 1101, there is a remarkable improvement. The change has been mostly through the reading and writing assignments undertaken throughout the semester. Currently, I am able to search for information on any given topic due to the skills I learned as I went about doing the assignments. Moreover, I have adjusted my reading habits in terms of frequency and time spent reading.

Currently, I spend more time reading than I used to spend before the semester. Finally, I am a better writer than I was before English 1101. This is evident from the writing tasks I have undertaken over the semester; from self-assessment, the written assignments have been improving with time since the semester started. Self-perception as an academic writer and an intellectual. At the beginning of the English 1101 course, I did not consider myself an academic writer. This means my confidence as an academic writer was quite low due to a lack of prior experience.

As is evident in my first reading and writing assignment, I had little if any of the academic writing skills. However, after tackling several of the class assignment, I came to know how to approach any piece of writing even if I have little knowledge or information on the topic under consideration. This development has significantly improved my confidence in academic writing. From my previous reading and writing habits, I was able to realize that they did not conform to good intellectual and academic writing practices.
