ho will teach students like they were taught when nothing else works, and in the back of their head follow teachers who taught them for a lot of their life. This problem makes breaking the “banking concept of education” a constant trouble for any educator.
The “banking concept of education” is a very traditional understanding of education where there is a big difference between the role of the teacher and the role of the student. The educator does, in this concept, work as a “depositer” whose role is to deposit information, narratives, and a lot of other things into the students, who function as “banks” for the depositing (Mills et. al. 315). Whichever student “banks” the best, by memorizing the material given to him or her by the teacher, by being able to “return” the information to the depositer closest to the way it was inputed, wins, is the best bank and is rewarded (317). There are obviously lots and lots of problems with this system, and many of them are really bad (such as the objectification of students, the saying the students experiences aren’t valuable, and treating them as having no knowledge in and of themselves and not having anything of value to give to the depositer that they were themselves not first given (317). Any educator who has studied in the past ten year must inherently understand the problems with this system, and yet people fall back into it perpetually.
The Banking conception of education has had a significant impact in my life. The way it probably has had the most impact is through teachers in the elementary, high-school levels and later who used the banking theory of education on me. Throughout my educational career, I was always rewarded when I took in and spat out information, and for most of my life thought that was what education was. I don’t think knowledge is something people can learn directly from books or teachers’ lessons because it cannot be learnt without understanding. But I do believe that people may gain knowledge from their daily life experiences and practices.
