I think that this is especially true considering the struggling economy right now. The demand for work is greater than the supply so little things like communication skills can prove to be the difference. Employers will immediately notice how a prospective employee communicates, and it may give me an advantage over all the other applicants. Beyond a simple job interview, good communication skills will allow me to rise through the ranks quickly. As in the case of Indra Nooyi, her remarkable communication skills allowed her the opportunity to be promoted regularly. Working as a dorm receptionist for an extra 50 cents an hour was never going to be enough for her, and I know that it will not be enough for me. I want to progress as far as I can in my career, and taking a communication course will help me to do that.

2) In today’s competitive workplace, businesspeople need to have a variety of skills to thrive. One of the keys to this is good communication, whether it be written, spoken, or in negotiation. Good grammar and clarity are essential for businesspeople who want to be understood in a relatively short time. Time spent debating an employer’s instructions is time lost from doing the main objective of the workplace—to make sales. Also, public speaking is an essential component of any business environment. It may be a weekly sales meeting or an Annual General Meeting, but public speaking is required to instill confidence in those who are taking in the message. In addition to this, businesspeople need to be able to sell a product to customers. This is a trait that is rarely learned; you either have it or you don’t. Effective sales pitches can be the difference between making a sale and having a customer walk away. Lastly, good strategic planning is required for any business person to succeed in the long term. No matter what business it is, clear direction is needed so that the company can plan its business strategy for the future.

3) Ethics and social responsibility can play a huge role in the sales of a business. Consumers feel better about themselves if they purchase a product from a company that is environmentally friendly and makes the right choices. If a company is found to be doing something unethical, it may be impossible to escape that tag. Once public opinion turns against a company or brand, then it is difficult to gain the trust of consumers once again. Even though many businesses would not admit it publicly, the reputation of a brand is huge.

Companies will even pay millions to clear their name. Indra Nooyi took a risky decision in choosing to sell off its fast-food brands, but the consumer response has shown this to be a shrewd move. Once PepsiCo gains a reputation for being a healthy company, investors will feel encouraged and will choose to invest even more in the company. Being socially responsible is a choice that every business has to make at some stage. Read More
