Extract of sample "Our Vanishing Night by Klinkenborg and The Way To Rain Mountain by Momaday"

Our nightlife has changed because of the artificial lighting that we use. We no longer see the bright night sky, nor are we interested in the lessons that watching the stars and clouds in the night sky have to offer us. We have, in fact, learned to ignore the night as nothing more than a hindrance to our lighted days. At this point, we don't even mind that we have altered the ecosystem around us by forcing animals into a totally different life pattern. Though the alteration poses no danger to us, it offers a huge problem to the creatures who rely on the night for their regular life cycles.

The night sky is also the focal point of “The Way To Rain Mountain” by N. Scott Momaday who is of the Native American Kiowas tribe.
