Extract of sample "Poverty and Health in Maria Rivera's Waiting"

Maria Rivera's story "Waiting" with its focus on poverty and the extra stress it can cause seems to suggest that we need better access to healthcare for the poor.
Actually, it is not just stress which the character gets from her poverty. This is very clear in the story she tells to get her medication, called "The Abortion." That part of the story is about how, because she was poor, she had to go to the "budget clinic" with her boyfriend after she needed an abortion (4).

This led to her having medical problems ever since, and eventually, she had to go to the ER to have surgery. She has to go to the ER when she is sick because "without insurance, there is no other way" (5) even though they "make you wait for all-day" (5), which only adds to her mental stress. This is why the title of the story is "Waiting," because it seems like that is all the character ever does, and that nobody is actively trying to help her. Overall the story shows why something like better healthcare for the poor would go a long way to making people's lives better. Read More
