This should start with the governments, the institutions than the people themselves. The central role of the government should be to determine the energy consumption picture of their cities. They also have an easy reach to their citizens and are better placed to know their needs and influence their behaviours. This is done depending on the resources, different needs, development paths, mandates and power.

An energy plan of a city should take into consideration the resources it has and the particular need of its dwellers. For instance, in New York, the dwellers are reliant on the power grid and vehicles that are fueled by hydrocarbon and they are hesitant to adopt the small-scale distributed approach that entails a little more cost. Thus, the government can come up with policies that would make the citizens adopt sustainable energy options or it can subsidize the prices of the small-scale energy distribution approaches that they can afford.

The institutions should also invest in technologies that reduce reliance on fossil fuels or even dirty coal. Institutions can do this y retrofitting buildings to make them sustainable in a way that reduces their demand for energy. They should invest in renewable energy as it is becoming economically viable since it offers to increase employment opportunities and it is cost-effective. In addition, investments in renewable energy by institutions are vital since inaction will be high as compared to when action is taken.

The energy sector is directly responsible for climate change whose costs of adaptation are very high. For instance, Sandy caused losses that were attributed to climate change and inaction by the government unwillingness to act against climate change. This is why Sandy has been highlighted as a deep-seated fear due to the physical damage it wrought upon New York and New Jersey. The people should also be willing to take responsibility for utilizing energy resources efficiently. They should do this voluntary in a matter that would not infringe on the future generations to come.

People should also learn to conserve energy where possible and buy devices that do not increase their reliance on fossil fuels that release many greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The population should be ready to take part in the expensive shift of the current dominance of energy to the one that utilizes renewable energy sources. Actually, if the community increases the demand for clean energy, then the release of greenhouse gases would decrease and consequently the climate change impacts.

For instance, the frequency of storms like Sandy would decrease. The challenges that are posed to cities by the energy sector are real. The increase in population and economic growth will lead to a swell in demand for energy thus a collective pressing for renewable energy should be advocated for. The government can work with market forces to create a playing ground that would be fair to all to facilitate the further growth of renewable energy. Through this then we would deal with the challenge of climate change amicably.
