? VIRTUALIZATION AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VIRTUALIZATION, CLOUD COMPUTING AND GREEN IT By Executive Summary Virtualization is a newly emerging idea. At the present, most of the organizations are adopting this technology. This technique allows the organizations to create a virtual version of something. It could be anything related to computing such as operating system, servers etc. In this way organizations can save a lot of money. They can also improve their performance. This report presents a detailed analysis of virtualization. This report outlines that how the technology of virtualization is adopted by the organizations and how organizations get benefits by adopting this technology. Introduction Virtualization could be very supportive to the organizations to take benefit of two or more virtual computing frameworks, having diverse operating systems, tools and software on one of hardware logically and inexpensively. In addition, virtualization can help the organizations minimize the distance among software applications, end users, and operating systems from the specific hardware characteristics of the systems they utilize to perform computational activities. Moreover, this technology makes certain to harmonize within a totally innovative signal of hardware and software renewal and also provides simplifying system updates and in various scenarios may get rid of the requirement for such updates (Golden & Scheffy, 2008). This report will offer a detailed overview of this modern technology. This report will discuss several advantages offered by this technology. At the end we will discuss how this technology is connected with other modern technologies such as cloud computing and green computing. Virtualization We can define virtualization as a logical view of computer based hardware environment through software. Additionally, the thinking behind the design of virtualization technologies is to provide concurrent access on single computer by using multiple operating systems. However, the software of virtualization runs among the operating systems that we normally use for instance, Mac OS, Windows, Linux and other computer supportive hardware, that take input on the operating system and transfer it to the suitable addresses that connect it with hardware. In addition, the virtualization software also performs functionality to reverse, in this way it catches the productive output that we avail from hardware resources as well as redirects it to the various locations of operating system that are suitable for it. In this scenario, one major thing about the os is that it doesn't identify or else any type of concern if it runs on a virtual system or on physical hardware. Moreover, the method of virtualization facilitates us to run various Windows of our choice on various operating systems such as Linux based environment, Mac, or PC with our preferred choice. Furthermore, various researches have outline that the virtualization technology is considered as an ideal solution for the usage of those applications that are used for medium or small level (Rankin 2011, Asosheh 2008, Huber, et al. 2010). We know that virtualization technology is considered as a useful technique of maximizing or enhancing physical resources. Additionally, the virtualization technology has a close connection with partitioning. However, it means that partitioning is useful for dividing a distinct physical server into several logical servers. In this scenario, once physical server is patronized, it accommodates logical servers in such a way that all logical servers are free in decision to run or execute a various applications and operating systems of our choice separately or independently. It is a true fact that in the mid 1990s, the virtualization technology was principally used to reconstruct those environments that are considered to be end user on a one portion of PC hardware. In some conditions if an IT manager wants to revolve out innovative software, although he wants to analyze its effective functioning on various environments e.g. Linux mechanism or on Windows NT. Moreover, virtualization technology is useful in the creation of different end user related environments (Waters 2011, Carapinha and Jimenez 2009). Virtualization technology is an ideal solution through which we can allow numerous instances of operating system to perform their actions at the same time by using a single pc. In addition, the concept of virtualization technology leads our mid toward the concept of extrication the hardware support from a single operating system. In this scenario, each “guest” OS is managed via a VMM (Virtual Machine Monitor). It is also acknowledged as a hypervisor. For the reason that the virtualization technological systems are successful in making a place among the hardware and the guest, in this way it can easily manage the utilization of CPU from guests, storage locations, and memory, yet it allows a guest operating system to transfer from one mechanism to other (RedHat 2011, Golden and Scheffy 2008). Disadvantages Virtualization brings a lot of facilities and opportunities for individuals and businesses. Thus, it can be said that virtualization is the wonderful technology for any corporation. Seeing that, virtualization offers numerous benefits (which will be discussed in next section) but it also has several negative aspects. In addition, if an organization successfully deals with these negative aspects it can implement a reasonable approach to virtualization and to make an appropriate decision if virtualization is appropriate in a given situation or not. In addition, the virtualization is somewhat unshakable; however there is still need to raise its share in the market. In this scenario, more than 75% of large size corporations adopt virtualization to some extent; on the other hand, most of those corporations have virtualized nearly 10% of their servers (Georgieva 2009, Shavit 2008). Some important failures that occur due to virtualization technology are: (Dubie 2008, Golden and Scheffy 2008) 1. Magnified problems: When we talk about magnified failures it means in the virtual environment, when we are dependent on the figure of virtual machines that reside on a physical box, a failure related to hardware might impact several virtual servers with those applications which hosted. 2. Degraded performance. Corporations that are involved in competitive market strategies to guarantee significant performance of the critical applications need more storage space and system related resources. In this scenario, with virtualization, sharing resources at a few times, working of these applications may well degrade, results in slower than preferred. 3. Old-fashioned skills. IT professionals may not recognize the expertise sets and we cannot relate to a huge virtualized manufacturing environment until they have it to exist. However, the skills desirable for the management of virtual environments may extent to all levels of support. 4. Difficult root cause study. Virtual machines are considered a keen concern when we supervise the complex problems. In addition, the problems that we faced in past inside server environments might be partial to one envelope, although at this instant the crisis can progress with the virtual machine environments. 5. No need of standardization. Various processes and tools that are useful to concentrate on the physical environment cannot be useful for the virtual environment; hence standardization is the main factor affecting the virtual environments. Advantages It is a true fact that virtualization technology is a normal routine for a lot of corporations. Additionally, the virtualization technology enables a sustainable development approach for the corporations. The most significant advantages that we avail in the user environment are: (Johonnesson 2011) 1. Virtualization technology is more effectively used in pc processing power 2. Use of virtualization technology results in reduction of energy consumption  (a) It is valuable for us to execute 1 physical server as a substitute of several others. (b) Virtualization technology also helps us in atmosphere conditioning that helps us to maintain the whole environment  (c) Another valuable aspect is that we don’t need any extra power backup essential resources. 3. Continual hardware purchases with up gradation (a) In all the hardware are virtualization process we don’t need to acquire control mechanism (b) Hardware up gradation is based on the level of software e.g. controller ,processor, memory. (c) We don’t require installing physical hardware components 4. It has capabilities to secure environment, re-establish and rapid backups  (a) its important feature is to capture even as Operating System that is running  (b) we may plan snapshots of Operating System according to our requirements  (c) as mentioned earlier we need shorter instant to pick up the entire Operating System 5. It creates easiness for the corporations in the form of reduction of IT visual projection and innovative applications are without difficulty deploy 6. IT organizational supervision is so much simple from any place in this globe that it requires only an Internet connection. 7. Security along with enhancing the performance of application and Capability to utilize clients that needs no safeguarding for hardware. 8. Virtualization technology provides several os to execute on the similar physical podium 9. Quicker client and server link is established throughout a virtual switch. Relationship between virtualization, cloud computing and green computing Cloud computing is a technique through which storage space with services are enabled over the cloud or Internet. On the other hand, the virtualization techniques are useful to run the virtual machines over a hypervisor. In this scenario, a VM (virtual machine) is execution of a mechanism through software to run the applications similar to physical machine. Each VM (virtual machine) includes its operational support, programs and existing libraries. Thus hypervisor enables a consistent and standardized concept of the fundamental physical machine. Hence numerous virtual machines can carry out concurrently on solitary hypervisor. Many researchers and analysts describe the most important implications that are based on user concern inside complete cloud functionality. Thus this decoupling approach of the Virtual Machines starting with the fundamental substantial hardware support that grants the identical virtual machines to exist on diverse physical equipment. Consequently we argue that virtualization technological aspects might view like a supporter designed for cloud computing environment, which allows cloud computing enabler the essential elasticity to shift and assign the available computing assets that are requested through end user where the existing physical resources are accessible (Eucalyptus Systems, Inc. 2011). Generally we can say that cloud computing is comprehensive approach of virtualization that is also useful in its implementation. In this scenario, a cloud computing stage is extra as compared to the compilation of required resources of computer as it enables such application towards the management of essential available resources. However, in an environment like cloud computing software is shifting from the desktop inside clouds of the worldwide internet, results in capability of implementing virtual techniques on those applications that are supported by users anytime. This implementation of applications can be adopted at any place where user has rights to their data and programs. Moreover, the idea behind the cloud computing environment with the virtualization technological approaches facilitates countless inventive opportunities. However, this innovative planning will result in enormous worth shaped for clients in the approaching era. Generally the developed technologies are sold due to the basics of cloud computing environment and understanding of development of its architecture (Global Science & Technology Forum 2011). Virtualization aspect can be analyzed as a vital element of general ongoing aspects of cloud computing that are developing its influence in the global market environment which results in the rapid expansion in various enterprise IT related features that includes self managing distributed computing resources, also a situation in which the Information Technological surroundings will be easily managed through convenient computing techniques in addition with apparent activities, in this scenario PC dispensation authority and influence is viewed as a useful tool through which customers are paid for simply as when desired. The customary objective of virtualization technology is to consolidate the managerial level as well as administrative related responsibilities as for the improvement of work load that we face and ability to perform well(scalability) (TechTarget 2000). In simple wording, cloud computing is described as a collection of resources that are enabled by virtualized computers. According to ongoing trends we can state that virtualized servers and the cloud computing environment allow the respective work load to be shifted in addition to scale away rapidly during the quick condition of physical machines or though virtual enabled environment. Hence, the idea that leads us to cloud computing approach is quite supportive, highly scalable models of programming and self recovering flow to facilitate the essential workloads that is helpful in recovering from a lot of expected problems or failures that are associated with hardware or software (Global Science & Technology Forum 2011). Green computing approach can be defined as computing that has no harmful effect on environment. This means that green computing is environmentally sustainable computing. We evaluate our idea as green computing is a branch in which we deals with numerous manufacturing processes ,disposing of server machines effective and efficient working of storage space and network communication devices. However, green computing is obtained as resourcefulness aspect in the technological as well as network services business. The basic idea behind this is to reduce the energy factor and its impacts on environment although we have all those applications with same functionalities and abilities that are used to achieve maximal performance. However it also has effects on environment and also impact on electricity management. Hence it results in the improvement of overall computer and server efficiency (Giannaros 2010). The relationship between green computing and the industrial ongoing trends for competency and to adopt global standards in order to achieve better position in the market place tends corporation either they are functioning in local sector or on in global market are exploring innovative behaviours to construct the largely well-organized utilization of computing resources. Various applications of virtualization plays vital factor in the productive implementation of green computing. However, most important goals of almost all sorts of virtualization technological aspects lead to the better arrangement and competent utilization of possible accessible resources of the system, that’s why green computing is central in the implementation of virtual environment (Kusnetzky 2007). Conclusion Virtualization is a logical view of computer based hardware environment through software. Additionally, the thinking behind the design of virtualization technologies is to provide concurrent access on single computer by using multiple operating systems. This paper has presented a detailed overview of virtualization. This paper has also discussed the relationship among cloud computing, virtualization and green IT. Organizations can apply these technologies in combination. Recommendation This report has offered a detailed overview of the virtualization and it is clear from the discussion that virtualization is very useful for the organizations in improving their performance. This report has also discussed other modern technologies such as cloud computing and green computing. If organizations apply these technologies jointly they would be able to get more benefits (benefits of all the technologies). The implementation of virtualization could be very useful for the organizations however in order to successfully implement the virtualization for any corporation, a strategy needs to be formulated. In this scenario, the development of the strategy will encompass a cautious understanding of what is to be virtualized, estimating the needs and requirements of the corporation, establishing the requirements which corporate services need to be virtualized, execution of virtualization and performance assessment following the virtualization have been formed in order to find the scope for enhancements (Golden & Scheffy, 2008).
