Interview of three business people. Mr. R Mr. is an accounting payable department manager by profession. His preference for that path of career is that he is good at accounting as well as does a very thorough job while at it. So passionate is Mr. R that he is eager to teach and introduce those willing to join his profession. Additionally, he also has available job openings for those interested. His first job in accounting was in Ney York where he worked as a fleet manager for about five to six years. It has now taken him twenty-three years to build his career in this profession. Among the many organizations he has worked for is Vine Board Education where he held the position of Purchase order Director. His education background started with him joining BMCC where he attained his AAS degree in Business Management. Later on, he joined Glassboro State College for his Bachelor of Arts degree in Marketing in the year 1978. His profession requires him to be very responsible in his duties and provide quality service to all students in the college. To be a good accountant, Mr. R emphasizes that good writing skills, coupled with basic bachelor’s level education is necessary. One also has to be very good at math and must possess good communication and computer skills (Kimmel, et al, pg. 302) In order to succeed, patience is one of the key elements in this profession. Accounting requires you to be very keen and this means spending long hours in verifying data and numbers, while contacting customers and suppliers of various goods and services. Moreover, you should also have very strong convictions in your undertakings. The main advantage in working in an accounting field is that the profession can be applied across different fields of professions. For instance, an accountant can be employed in schools or a business organization where he or she gets to handle work in those respective fields. In order to be valuable to your employers, an accountant should be able to portray skills that no other staff in the organization has. This will make his or her special, therefore, will be treasured. The downside of being an accounting payable department manager is that you can find it very difficult to perform your duties if one does not seek professional skills or stay on top of his game. The profession, however, is very rewarding. An average accountant gets a monthly salary of seven-thousand dollars ($ 7,000) which translates to approximately eighty-thousand dollars a years ($ 80,000). Given the chance to do everything all over again, Mr. R would still go back to accounting since the profession provides him with the satisfaction that he needs and also guarantees his security in leading a comfortable life. His future plan currently, is to retire in the next five years, since he has achieved most of his goals in life right now. His advice to those planning to join this career path is to get a higher degree in this field. Afterwards, he or she should gain some experience by working in the public sector and other government organizations. His advice for the interviewer was that he should prepare his degree, gain more experience in that field, then take the CPA examinations. Miss Y. Miss Y preference for choosing her career path was because she is very good with numbers and a very responsible person. She also hopes that she could assist customers by responding to their questions and solving their problems. Her first job was in a bank where she managed to secure the job through an interview. Currently, she has experience in her career spanning close to twenty years. As she earlier mentioned, she started her career in a bank, there after joined a certain high school where she taught accounting. Presently, she is employed in one of the branches of BMCC as a budget director. Miss Y education background is impressive. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Management in New York University. Later on, she earned her master’s degree in MPA from Barunch College. As a Budget director, her main duty in her current employment is reporting financial statements. Additionally, she is responsible for providing quality service to every other college student in the institution. In her opinion, a two-year college graduate can apply for DC 37 employee. However, a civil servant test must be taken for one to be considered for employment in that organization. The college, however, does not offer any training programs for both two year and four year graduates. Her employer does not hire anyone without a bachelor’s degree; therefore, those with A.A.S degree have never and will not be employed in that organization. For one to be considered for advancement, Miss Y emphasizes that he or she should work very hard since promotion is determined by ones job performance (Kimmel, et al, pg. 302). During an interview, key aspects that they often look for are work experience and the test score one gets after performing a DC-37 test. Once one is employed in that organization, there are a number of benefit packages one gets. These include a vacation date, a sick leave as well as medical benefits. The turnover rate of the employee is often very low. However, the job security is very stable. As a word of advice, Miss y recommends that I finish my two year degree first, and then continue with the 4 year degree. Afterwards, I must look for a part time job where I will gain the necessary experience needed by most employers. However, her department does not have any openings for part time jobs. She recommends that I try and seek other departments which may have an opening for two years degree students. Mr. A Mr. A is an accounting class professor by profession. His interest for that career path was motivated by his love for numbers. His first accounting job was in New York City with the famous National Kidding Foundation. He currently has a rich experience in accounting that spans for twenty-five years. He has worked for a number of organizations such as MBA and CPA in Loeb and Troper in the year 2000. Afterwards, he joined Affiliate of Catholic Charities in Builders for Family and Youth dioceses of Brooklyn in 2004. Later on, he worked as the controller of accounting in Brooklyn Community Services in 2007. Lately, he has served as the accounting system controller and as a chief financial officer. Both these jobs required that he reports to his supervisor on any task given. Additionally, he prepares monthly financial statements as well as keeps in touch regularly with banks about their financial statements. The most desirable skill in this profession, according to Mr. A, is good analytical skills, knowledge in computer software as well as good management of numbers (Kimmel, et al, pg. 302). As a person, one needs to be hard working in order to achieve their goals in this field. The main advantage in working in this field is that it is fast growing and also one gets rewarded handsomely for work done. The disadvantage, however, is that it requires one to work long hours therefore, it could be very tiring. Given the chance to start all over again, Mr. A admits that he would not hesitate to pursue accounting yet again. His reasons for this still remain the same arguing that he has a liking in working with numbers. His future plans for his career is to keep his CPA credit and continue with his education work in the college. For aspiring accountants, Mr. A advices that they should graduate first in college, then ensure their GPA is high enough and finally prepare to work on a CPA examination. In response to my question about my career, he says that I should finish my college studies then ensure my GPA is high enough. Afterwards, I should do my bachelor’s degree in four years then pursue and MBA. CPA exams should follow thereafter while I keep searching for a part time accounting job that will earn me the necessary experience required. Conclusion. From the above information, it is important to note that pursuing career paths requires a certain level of determination and interest in that particular field. This would make it very easy for one to settle down on that particular career. Hard work is also relevant since it is the determining factor for reward in these careers. For instance, many organizations reward or promote their staff depending on their level of dedication and hard work they put in the organization. Level of education also plays a crucial role in following career paths. It is important for one to get the highest level of education in that profession for one to be competitive in the market (Kimmel, et al, pg. 302). Additional training and experience also works in one’s favor when job searching. Employers often seek to recruit people with the relevant and desired experience since they would be more productive if recruited into the organization. Reference Kimmel, Paul D, Jerry J.
