However, Chinese are classified into classes according to their social status. T he social classes have special caste system where one cannot cross to the next class. Wang Ping brings out the living conditions the low class people living in china undergo as it is portrayed by the kind of food they feed on, the shelter and their proximity to the urban centers. The low class individuals in China as brought out by Wang Ping do many odd jobs. Wang Ping mentions that the father is a master hunter and fisherman (Wang 172).

They have nothing much to pride themselves with because they spend most of their time catching the fish. The dangers associated with this kind of job are unbearable. Dangerous animals are found in the waters, the kind of boats they use while fishing are not of good quality which can easily capsize hence exposing them to water animals like the crocodiles. Wang Ping points out the existence of big animals in the water, which the fishermen call them river elephants. Regardless of the existence of such dangerous animals, they still did fishing because they have no other alternative work to do.

Wu Pan narrates his grief when he lost his mother into the river. Working in salt production down the valley by the resident, which included Wu Pan’s father, was so risky since they were inexperienced and had no insurance covers. Wu Pan states that his father was once trapped by the landslides while ringing his bell (Wang 174). Low class individuals do not find time to rest; the more they work the higher their chances of getting something to fill their stomach. Days can pass without anything in their nets, “for five days I had been throwing the net into the water and pulling it in.

but nothing came to me, not even a shrimp” (Ping p.172). This explains the desperation the low class individuals undergo; they do not give up easily because the activity is the only source of livelihood. Their zealous nature to work in order to better their lives triggers their brains to keep thinking of any other thing they can do to improve their lives as well as get some income and be their own employers. Wu Pan thought of selling the sturgeon on the black market and save some money for buying corn and sweet yams in large quantities to sustain them for the periods spring and winter until the summer crops are ready for consumption.

Wu Pan also thought of how he could spare some coins so that he can purchase a piglet, and raise it until maturity, and sell it. The money from the sale of the one piglet, he thought he could buy two other piglets and purchase nice clothes so that when he goes to the market he would easily attract the opposite sex. Classification has hit him so much that they cannot even have a girl loving them because the kind of clothes they put on is not decent. The thought of buying a piglet is a sign of poverty, which Wu Pan is really determined to change his status as projected from his thought.

Food is a rare commodity among the low class individuals. They go for several days without food. Wu Pan notes that he had not had food three days since the last yam he ate. This shows the high magnitude of hunger the people in this class are subjected to. It is not by choice but the way they are socialized puts them in that state. Wu Pan asks himself if he could mistake fish for a woman (Ping 172). Marginalization and exclusion is common among the low cla
