Critical review Name: Institution: Community in a Gated Residential Estate Introduction Contemporary urbanization in Australia is based on gated residential estates. The development of infrastructure, coordination of supply chain and ensuring a consistency in design are based on these estates. Home owner associations formed by the privately owned firms establish micro-urban control over the management and further expansions of these estates. The rapid growth of these gated estates calls for research as their proliferations and accompanied importance makes it so complex in a global perspective. Gated estates are ephemeral and hence do not offer establishment of communities as they are characterized by densely populated residential structures minimizing spaces that could have permitted the development of communities. The paper is thus aimed at assisting us understand the lifestyles, way of living as well as forms among the gated estates as there is information asymmetry in respect to these. Macquarie Links research on gated estates forms the main premise to which the paper pivots. The communities experience and expression was seen to basically attach to markers and private manner of the estates. The formation and the communities experience as well as its management was found to be erected on communities association as it provided the residents with point of identification and a sense of communal belonging as well as designing the urban planning. The estate had security guard that were responsible for the security of the estates and determined the estates boundaries. Urban communities Communities have become more ideological and are formed through the application of information technologies that enhance social networks and integration among the masses of same interest. Urban is seen to be in conflict with the formation of the community as communities are associated to rural areas. Urban community formation is seen to have suffered several setbacks arising from individualism and anomie of current cities as well as private affluence. However, ethnography is at logger head with the argument inability of community formation in urban as it has found that peaceful neighborhoods between urban and community. Such scholars have based their arguments on the fact that urbanization traces its origin from the communities and are expanded and supported by the communities. The term community in isolation is inadequate to explain the complexities of the urban- community linkages and the there is a need to first understand what clear meaning of the community among the individuals as they are thought to fear diversities. The solution to this challenge would be recognition that magnitude to which the community is fractured as well the realization of the political nature attached to the community and to help people globally understand this concept. Master planning community Marketing of the private residential estates is based on the concept of the community as the term gated community used during the advertisements to refer to gated estates to appeal more among those moving or aim at moving ton such estates. Marketers use such tricks to vividly persuade clients that it is there is peaceful coexistence in those estates as people have same aims. Community can be achieved by amenity, design and establishment of neighborhood infrastructure. Cases of insecurities and crime rates are identified as some of the impediments to community establishment. The emergence of private management of the structures in terms of their formation and negotiations became very important as this was seen establishment of a community. Methodology and case study Macquarie Links being one of the greatest residential gated estates with over 300 privately governed estates. The residents were incorporated in the management through the committee forming unique form of management that made it attractive. There are 17 neighborhoods with each represented by the chair that regularly meet four times a year to discuss issues of concern. The survey found out that over 40% of the resident were born oversees with 10% originating from Philippines. The rent income arising from these estates doubled all of the other residential in Sydney with 68% of the houses acquired via the mortgaging. This research in 2007 basically involved interviews and survey among the residents. A 25% respondents were noted out of the 200 questionnaires given household each having six pages. The main objective of the questionnaires was to determine what motivated the residents to move into the gated estates as well as their expectations. The nature of the community was captured via the 30 interviews besides the 52 questionnaires that had been reacted to. Another interview involve the association chair which was also important person to give the responses. The limitation of the study was the assumption that the residents interviewed were properly engaged in the management of the estates and hence knowledgeable enough concerning the estates. The use of SPSS enabled the analysis of the survey data and manual coding was done interview outcomes using the thematic content analysis. Community in Macquarie Links This study raised questions among the residents on whether they felt sense of belonging in that community with 86% responding in affirmative manner. Another open sessions was conducted where the residents were to explain why they felt belonged to such community. It was found that associations and the committee meetings enabled residents feel sense of belonging as they were friendly in such meetings. Several attractions including better securities, availability of amenities and peaceful ambience made people motivated to reside in such estates. Conclusion It was found that developers of the estate only promise community in the gated estates but it is far from reach. In contradiction, it would be wrong to assert that residents were only serving in the associations and the governance that brought them together as they are as fully interdependent of communal and private residents. Many resident believed their actions and the experience in the gated estates pointed towards possible establishment of a community. Many companies employ .professional in the management of the residential areas which reduce the private governance and hence derail community formation. Dasycercus cristicauda Introduction This is a small animal from the family of marsupial mammals found in central Australia feeding mostly on insects, arachnids, crustaceans and lizards. It burrows and are of two species; the South Africa’s species known as D. cristicauda hillieri and the Australian species called D. cristicauda. Its conservation has posed a serious challenge due to variation in approaches people attach to weather changes. They hibernate at some station and are present in some areas hence difficult to conserve. They are vulnerability in Queensland and are seen to multiply very first posing a further challenge to conserve. The research uses the Felis catus obtained from Queensland’s Mount Isa to unearth much about this mammal. Methods Mica Creek was the area under study which was approximated to be 10 kilometers away from Mount Isa. The research was conducted in 1994. The place had a scattered forest cover mainly made of eucalyptus covering, herbs, less dense spinifex grass and other grass which was similar to Uplands of Mount Isa. The Creek was dominated by Lophostemon grandiflorus with eucalyptus being found along the drainage lines. Vegetation devoid plains which were characteristic with high amount of gravel found between the drainage lines. The lithhosols formed that main soil at the undulating areas of the Creek with red stones lying shallowly in surface found on the colluvial places. The soils were characterized by silicified substances, quartzite and much coverage of gravel of limestone. The determination of the bone remains and the mammal hair formed the greater part of the research and this was aided by the collection and the subsequent critical examination predator scats. The microscopic analysis of 15 scats that were collected along the dirt tracks was done based on the methodology of standard hair analysis using the whole scats as a well as their cross-sections. Results Analysis revealed distinctive characteristic of Dasycercus cristicauda’s hair resulting from the identification of such remains from the two scats believed to be from the feral cat. These hair gave a clear distinctions from other mammals and hence could not easily be confused to be of other mammals. A further re-examination of the revealed hairs was conducted by another specialist on a mammalian hair using both the cross-sections and whole specimen to justify these earlier findings and his report justified the findings. Discussion The revelation of the existence of Dasycercus in Creek meant an importance as it created awareness pointing that more places were inhabited by this mammals removing an earlier notion of belief that they only existed in Sandringham Station in Queensland and Ethabuka Dune Camp. It revealed an extension of about 350 kilometers from such earlier known areas. The Creek had all the characteristic which was found to be in contradiction of preferred habitat by the mammal as it was seen to be of great variations to the earlier habitat and therefore, a strong contrast which further confirms the range of the mammal possible unfavorable environment. The discovery of the Dasycercus in the Creek was came as a surprise to many as the habitat was in total contrast to the earlier believed habitats requirements for this mammal. This then called for serious and extensive research in the areas of Mount Isa to reveal more possibilities of such existence. There is also need for researchers to use the live captured specimens. Abstract Daunting challenges in conserving a burrowing tiny Australian Dasycercus Over the past few years, conserving Dasycercus in Australia has posed a daunting challenge. This result from the hibernation of this mammal at some periods of the year. This has also be caused by variations among the different ways thorough which people approach the environmental variations. There has been urgent need to identify the extension and the ranges of this mammal. There has been a misconception about the features of the habitats that are inhabited by these mammals. It is for this reason that a research to unearth this phenomenon was conducted in Creek, 10km away from Mount Isa in Australia. Fifteen scats were captured and hair standard analysis methodology was done and it was revealed that two scats revealed the remains of Dasycercus. The report was further subjected to a reconfirmation by another mammal hair specialist and his result also conformed to the earlier result. This outcome came as a surprise as Creek lack the features that favored inhabitation of Dasycercus. This shifted many researchers to conduct further studies and there was need to use the lively captured specimen to further support the existence of the Dasycercus in areas around Mount Isa.
