Effective Work Health and Safety Management for XYZ Organization Introduction WHS is an acronym for work health and safety and it describes the skills, performance outcomes, and knowledge necessary to manage WHSIS work health and safety information systems. WHS management involves collecting, communicating and managing information related to the performance of the workers. The process involves collection of safety and health data and information of the project implementers. The data and information gathered is essential for dealing with health and safety of workers in a systematic manner. WHS is conducted in order to comply with the laws and regulations. Communication and dispersion of information concerning Workplace Health and Safety in any organization eliminates and inhibits work-related injuries and illnesses. Precise safety and health information should be provided to the employees in order to allow them carry their routine activities safely. Furthermore, WHS informs employees about their safety activities and health standards thereby improving safety outcomes. WSH ensures that organizations undertake safety and better health management systems to reduce accidents and increase efficiency and productivity. WSH also informs other employees of accidental incidents and possible corrective measures. Employees in the organization are obliged to adhere to safety requirements provided to them by their supervisors. For instance, the employees should follow the guidelines stipulated by the work place signs and procedures of safety work. Employees also have an obligation to report to their overseers the cases where other employees and visitors are unable to interpret the safety signs and information. WSH involves the use of safety alerts where hazards, events and details from study findings can be availed to the management of the organization. The WHS committee should regularly review and update the safety requirements to ensure that they are applicable and effective to the organization. 13. Using Table 1, calculate the annual LTI incident rate for each site. (Show your calculations using the formulas)  The LTI incident rate refers to the number of lost time injuries for every 100 employees. It is calculated by multiplying the total number of all reported cases by 200,000 (100 employees X 40 hour weeks X 50 weeks per year). The resulting number is then divided by the number of working hours at the company. LTI incident rate = (Number of reported injury incidents X 200,000). Total number of worker hours worked. Therefore, assuming that the company has 2,000 employees; For site 1 we have LTIIR = (170 +11+ 13 +17 +37 +5 +24 +12 +10 +23 +5)*200,000 2,000 X 2,000. = 327 X 200,000. 4,000,000 = 16.35. We now know that, for 100 workers at site 1, 16.35 employees have suffered injury incidents. Similarly, for site 2; LTI incident rate = (Number of reported injury incidents X 200,000). Total number of worker hours worked. Assuming that the site has 2,000 workers; LTIIR for site 2 = (110 +19 +8 +17 +5 +5 +3 +1)*200,000 1,000 X 2,000. = 168 X 200,000 2,000 X 2,000. = 33,600,000 4,000,000. = 8.4 It is now known that at least 8.4 employees out of every 100 workers have recorded injuries. In the case of site 3, we have; LTI incident rate = (Number of reported injury incidents X 200,000). Total number of worker hours worked. Assuming that the site has employed 2,000 workers; LTIIR For site 3 = (70 +19 +12 +4)*200,000 2,000 X 2,000. = 104 X 200,000 4,000,000 = 5.2 It is now clear that for every 100 workers, 5.2 workers have recorded cases of injuries. 14. Using Table 1, calculate the annual LTI frequency rate for each site. Note: Each worker works 2000 hours per year. (Show your calculations using the formulas). The annual LTI frequency rate of the three sites is computed by multiplying the total number of LTI’s by 1,000,000. The resulting numerical value is then divided by the total hours worked. Therefore, LTIFR for site 1= (Number of reported injury incidents X 1,000,000 Total number of worker hours worked. = (170 +11+ 13 +17 +37 +5 +24 +12 +10 +23 +5) X 1,000,000 2,000 X 2,000. = 327,000,000. 4,000,000 = 81.75 This implies that site 1 experienced 81.75 lost time injuries for every 1,000,000 worked between January and December. Also, for site 2 assuming a total of 2,000 employees; LTIFR for site 2= (Number of reported injury incidents X 1,000,000 Total number of worker hours worked. (110 +19 +8 +17 +5 +5 +3 +1) X 1,000,000 2,000 X 2,000. = 168 X 1,000,000. 4,000,000 = 42.0 This indicates that site 1 experienced 42.0 lost time injuries for every 1,000,000 worked between January and December. Similarly, for site 3; LTIFR for site 2= (Number of reported injury incidents X 1,000,000 Total number of worker hours worked. = (70 +19 +12 +4) X 1,000,000 2,000 X 2,000. = 105,000,000. 4,000,000 = 26.25. This implies that site 1 experienced 26.25 lost time injuries for every 1,000,000 worked between January and December. 15. Using Table 1, calculate the mean for each site. For site 1;  The mean lost time injuries for site 1 = 170 +11+ 13 +17 +37 +5 +24 +12 +10 +23 +5 12 = 27.25 lost time injuries. Similarly, for site 2; The mean lost time injuries for site 2 = 110 +19 +8 +17 +5 +5 +3 +1 12 = 14 lost time injuries. Finally, for site 3; The mean lost time injuries for site 1 = 70 +19 +12 +4 12 = 8.75 lost injury hours. 16. Using Table 1, create a LTI graph comparing the 3 sites. Graph 1. Using the XYZ WHSIS complete Table 2, for the number of days lost between January 2013 and December 2013.  The table below shows indicates the number of days lost by the workers between January and December of the year 2013. The days lost are tabulated based on lost time injury provided by the WHSIS table. The number of days lost by workers for each month are found by multiplying the total lost time injuries of the month by the daily employee work hours and the resulting solution divided the number of hours in a day. Daily employee work hours = (2,000)/ (365) = 5.48 hours per day. There days lost for each month= LTI’s X expected worker hours per day 24 hours. For instance, days lost by workers of site 1 in the month of January 2013 is equal to; 170 X 5.48 24 Which yields 39 days. Using the information gathered in questions 12 – 18 and the data from the XYZ WHSIS, prepare an annual safety performance report for the WHS Committee members An annual safety performance safety report is provided below. The report is meant to identify areas of weaknesses and present them to WHS committee members who will take appropriate measures to find remedies to the existing safety challenges. Lost time injuries. There were many lost time injuries especially at site 1 at the beginning of the year. Site 1 recorded the highest lost time injuries of 170 injuries while sites 2 and 3 recorded a maximum of 110 and 70 injuries respectively. The reported injuries drastically reduced in the cause of the year and reached zero during December for all the three sites. Some of the workers were ignorant of the signs and safety measures at the beginning of the year but were later trained and introduced to guidelines of the job safety. The LTI’s incident was high in three sites however, site 3 exhibited a lower LTI incident rate. Most of affected workers suffered minor injuries due to careless handling of machinery but there were fatalities at either of the sites. Some of the affected employees also remarked that they lacked enough experience in operating the machines. In addition, workers at site 1 lost a total of 80 days while those at sites 2 and 3 lost a total of 43 and 2 days respectively. Site 1 installed more signs with simplified notations at the end of beginning of January which greatly reduced the number of lost time injuries from 170 to 11. In mid-February, site 2 issued safety manuals to its workers when the site learned that the lost time injuries were increasing gradually. On the other hand, we advised site 3 to encourage its employees to adhere to the existing safety guidelines because the site was not greatly affected by the lost time injuries. There was not a single lost injury in the month of December. On average, workers at site 1 lost more duration than any of the sites. 20. Create a new Excel spread sheet named Hazard Reports. Analysis of the WHSIS information of the XYZ organization, indicates that the workers suffer a higher rate of lost time injuries especially at the beginning of the year. The WHS committee should therefore enact health policies meant to protect the workers from work-related accidents. The committee should install safety signs throughout the organization which will guide the worker to take the right decision. The committee should also frequently review its safety regulations in order to comply with the emerging issues and as new ideas are adopted by the organization. Furthermore, the management should organize periodic workshops and seminars for the employees. The workshops will equip the employees with knowledge about safety regulations and guidelines at their workplaces. Conclusion. Regular analysis of work health and safety is essential in any organization. It enables the management and WHS committee know the areas that need improvements in order to reduce lost time injuries and other incidents affecting the workers. Work cited. Gallagher, C.
