It is imperative that we acknowledge the presence of a direct relationship between melanocytes and most skin conditions. In essence, once melanocytes produce melanin, it is supplied to keratinocytes.
One of the most serious skin conditions is skin cancer. It has always been recognized that overexposure to sun rays or ultraviolet radiation would significantly damage one’s skin. The penetration of ultraviolet rays into the skin can damage collagen, a protein known to hold the skin together in a smooth and firm way (Vincent 37). It causes melanoma, a rare but most deadly skin cancer type. Testament to its deadly nature is the fact that it accounts for over 80% of all skin cancer deaths. Melanoma occurs when melanocytes become mutated and affect various parts of the skin including the scalp, nail beds, anus, eyes, and soles of the feet.
Ultraviolet radiation of the sun is known to attack pigmentation cells or melanocytes. The cells react by increasing the melanin production as well as sending melanosomes to the surface of the skin (Vincent 36). While these melanosomes filter out the sun rays, they also destroy the pigmentation cells’ DNA thereby resulting in melanoma, age spots and freckles. In essence, overproduction or underproduction of skin pigmentation or melanin would result in skin problems.
Conclusion
Melanocytes play a unique role as far as determining skin and hair coloration is concerned.
