Interpersonal Communication

For effective communication there must be a good speaker and a good listener. There are several techniques that can be employed by the audience to make sure they grasp everything that is said to them by the speaker. Good listening skills help preserve the originality of information even as it is being peddled from one person to the other. A good listener is always focused on the speaker and maintains an eye contact with them. The reason why there should be constant eye contact between the speaker and the audience is to make sure that there is no divided attention by getting caught up in other activities. In Dianne Schilling, “10 Steps of Effective Listening” the audience should have an open mind as they receive the information from the speaker. They should not hold predetermined thoughts about the what the speaker is about to say and that will help them to make sure they pay attention even to the finest details being given by the speaker. The listener should strive to receive and appreciate the speakers thoughts without jumping into conclusion (Schilling, 2012). An effective listener is relaxed and takes in every statement being made by the speaker. They take their time to internalize the message before saying anything in return and in most cases good listeners do not given instant feedback to the messages they receive. In communication skills it has always been taught to the students that it is rude to interrupt the speaker and so good listeners do not interrupt the speaker because it could send different signals to the speaker. A good listener is not quick to give their thoughts and solutions to a particular matter in question, they take their time to comprehend what is said to them.

According to Henrik Edberg, “How to Become a Better Lister” the listener should always give the speaker the time to conclude what they have to say and then seek clarification on areas that they think they did not understand fully. Questions should not be meant to challenge the speakers thought but they should ensure that they understand all that has been said by the speaker (Edberg, 2020). The listener should make sure that they align themselves in line with the speaker’s thoughts and feelings. The listeners should not create a fault between them and the speaker, they should feel the speakers mode and the way they deliver the message. Listening is not enough but the listener should make sure they focus on other non-verbal cues that are employed by the speaker to make sure they understand even the hidden message in the information presented. Through one on one communications the speakers message can be seen in their facial expressions and that could be the most important part of the message that the speaker cannot present verbally.

There are times when the speakers message is not always clear to the listener and so there are several clarifying guidelines that showed be followed in case the listener does not understand the speakers message. The first one is to admit that the speaker’s message is not clear and that you cannot understand it and that way it would be easy to call them out for clarification. The listener should repeat what the speaker has said just in case they got it the wrong way, there are times when the listener interprates the speakers message wrongly. In areas where the information is not clear enough then the listener should politely ask the speaker to use specific examples that they can relate with. It gives them a clear understanding of the speakers message.

To effectively communicate to a co-worker then as a speaker one should create a conducive environment where the co-worker is open to receive whatever information that is delivered to them. As the speaker there should be high levels of confidence and seriousness to make sure that the listener receive the information with the seriousness it deserves. A listener is always keen when listening to a serious and defined speaker who has well outlined points. As a speaker simple words should be used to make sure that receive can comprehend the information easily on t6he first time they hear about without having to ask for clarification through examples.
