2nd October SSSR Press Release - August 9, With the rapid development of the society and the increasing amount of companies, the pollution problem is much more serious than 20 years ago. In modern society, the majority of pollution comes from our daily life. For example, the factories and the heavy traffic cause the air pollution. Environment protection is a very important subject that affects not only our life but also our descendant. The SSSR organization, which has a strong and powerful background, gives us some reasons to make the people to protect the Rosemont Mine. The SSSR organization uses strong ethos, logos and pathos to make the people to believe it and try to make the people fight the company to stop damaging the environment. Save the Santa Ritas being a non profit organization is more concerned with protection of environmental degradation. Due to mining and other exploration of minerals in the area the residents who live in the south of Tucson feels in the coming years their descendants will suffer due to environmental degradation. This paper aims at discussing the strategies and concepts that are covered by the SSSR’S press release. The SSSR have strong background in Arizona. The company was formed in 1996 to protect the scenic, aesthetic, recreational and wildlife values of the Santa Rita Mountains through education and outreach, including protection of the Santa Ritas from degradation due to mining activities. The SSSR always help people to protect the environment. They have successful cases previously. For example, in 2005 Augusta Resource, the SSSR found that Rosemont ranch was bought for a small mining company to dump their tailings and waste on public lands. They managed to find the manager to make the company stop damaging the environment. They achieved good result in this case that can make the organization more reliable. Tucson being at the mountains of Arizona will be affected since mining will be done in the mountains where water sources are found. This is the reason why the residents of South of Tucson condemn it in the strongest means possible. Residents of Tucson will experience economic downfall due to devastating effects of Rosemont mine. The supporters of the mining Augusta indicates that Rosemont mine has a good public relation with the residents of Tucson since the mining will be beneficial to the future generations of southern Arizona and improvement in economic stability of the area. The strong ethos makes the people to believe in the SSSR. For example, Tucson residents are known for their farming activities among other agricultural produce like rearing of livestock. Within the Arizona region, there are wild animals that can make people have a look at the wonderful wildlife. More and more people travel to Arizona that leads to the environment unprotected such as the excessive oil exploitation. Due to this, the SSSR wants to tell us to protect the environment. The company from Canada is called Rosemont Copper Company and its major business is mining. When the mining started the sky changed it color which was blue, the water isn’t clean anymore and a lot of noises are made in the Rosemont. The resident’s hopes people if they pool together they will protect the environment. The strong pathos depicted by the SSSR’s press release is a key aspect to environmental conservation. Being an organization that was formed to make sure that the environment in southern Arizona is not damaged, SSSR has being working together with other groups to make sure environment will not be damaged in the southern of Tucson. Through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) the group has been concerned with Rosemont mine since they base their ideas on the investors who destroy trees in the name of mining. Within the SSSR’s press release readers are provided with strong emotions that indicates that negativities of destroying the environment. Save the scenic Santa Ritas has been using violent means to stop damaging of trees or minerals since some of the investors have been harvesting trees and minerals. This is unethical to use violence means but logically, the environment should not be destroyed. The SSSR is being accused of misrepresenting the letter since Environmental Protection Agency is going to work with Army corps to make sure that environmental degradation is solved. Environmental Protection Agency has been clear on the discharges that come from the companies and they term it as toxic mine wastes. Rosemont mine, EPA and U.S. forest service (USFS) have been working together to make sure that those investors who want to engage in mining industry are not going to be licensed and thus not being permitted to work. This process has been futile since Save the Scenic Santa Rita has been trying everything to stop approval of mine. Logically, if there are measures taken to prevent environmental pollution there is need to allow those investors who are mining to carry on since mitigations are scientifically approved. Their main agenda in 1996 was to make sure that ASARCO/ Forest Service Land mining in Rosemont valley would not carry open copper mine. The use of strong concept of logos by the SSSR’s press release is also in curbing the environment destruction. Through the laboratory testing that was spearheaded by Knight Piesold, the press release provided inductive as well as deductive reasoning as well as backing of claims on the environmental conservation (SSSR Press Release - August 9, 2014).. SSSR’s press release indicates that it is good to make sure that the Clean Water Act together with the Clean Air Act is going to be implemented. These two laws are supposed to be followed accordingly and this is the reason why disasters like open –pit copper mine is going to be restricted in the area. From environmental observers and other researchers, southern Arizona is known due to water as an important resource. Copper is not valued in the area and this is the reason why copper mine should not be considered is it is an environmental hazard. Violation of Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act is the offense which has been seen while mining copper and this is the reason why Environmental Protection Agency needs to withdraw mining permit to the companies. Rosemont mining is a bad idea since tourism sector would be greatly affected since it will interfere with clean water and air. This violation will have negative effects of residents and their farming practice will be a problem to them. The Save the Santa Rita Mountains brochure Due to the climatic condition of the area individuals are relocating going to areas like Historic Kenyon Ranch, Elegant Spanish home and foothills of the Santa Rita Mountains. Foothills are bordered by the national forest which makes climatic condition of the area to be the best thus making it an attraction site. Additionally, foothills are bordered by state land with rolling hills, good mountain views and Santa river valley. Summary From the above discussion, it is clear that the SSSR’s press release that was made on August 9, 2014 provided strong ethos, pathos and logos that would assist in the prevention of environmental catastrophe in the region of Arizona. Through the use of strategies such as laboratory testing, soil analysis, involving of regulatory agencies, and written objections the SSSR’s press release indicates why Rosemont Mine is not to be allowed.
