Abduulah Alanazi In the Land of the Free Sui Sin was born in Edith Maud Eaton in England on March 15, 1865 and died on April 7, 1914. Sui Sin was born to an English father and a Chinese mother. Sui Sin’s family left England to live in Montreal, Canada when she was only seven years old. Sui Sin started writing as a young girl, and she focused her writing on her life as a Chinese-American. She published thirty-seven stories that were compiled in the book Mrs. Spring Fragrance. One of the stories that was published in the magazine Independent in 1909 was In the Land of the Free.

This story attracted my attention because it shows the irony the immigrants had to go through, which is similar to my own story when I came to the United States. I thought that once I arrived in the United States, the doors of heaven would be opened to me and everything would be all right. Therefore, in order to understand and enjoy the story, I will focus on three areas: the setting, the main characters, and the plot. This story takes place in San Francisco, California, which is a state located on the west coast of the United States.

This story took place before the time period of the Eastern Queen, which was a United States Navy cargo vessel that found its origins in China. This story has a limited number of characters, which includes only three main characters. The first character is the mother, Lae Choo, who is of Chinese descent. She is a very patient and loving mother. Her son, referred to as Little One, was being held by the American government, and Lae Choo felt that she would die everyday when she was unable to see her son.

Lae Choo also lost a lot of weight, since she hardly eats. She spent all of her time thinking about Little One. In addition, Lae Choo cared not for her appearance or for her own life. She is a mother with sadness, sleeplessness, and anxiety to see her son. The father, Hom Hing, is the second main character in the story. He is a good father, and he is attempting to build a sweet family. He never stopped asking for the rights that he felt that he deserved as a new citizen of the United States. Hom Hing was a businessman, but he loved his family more than his career.

The third main character is James Clancey, who is a lawyer and a greedy young man. James loved money more than anything else. Though he might have been greedy, he was also very smart. He knew everything about the law, which made it easier for him to win any case. The story starts when Hom Hing and Lae Choo arrived to the United States with Little One. Hom Hing had been to the United States before, but it was Lae Choo’s first time, as well as Little One’s, who had been born and spent his life in China.

At the immigration office, the parents had no papers to show the Customs Officer that Little One was their son. Hom tried to convince the officers that Little One was his son, but the officers were forced to follow the strict rules. The officers would have to keep Little One until they got clearance from Washington, who would allow the child to enter the United States. The next day, Hom went to the customs office, but the officer said they had not received a response from the American government.

Hom and Lae were sad because of the inefficiency of the United States Government. After five months, Hom was still doing everything he could do to get his son back. While walking up and down the street, Hom came upon James, a young lawyer who was willing to help Hom and Lae get their son back. James suggested that they go to Washington and make the government give him the paper in order to restore the child to his parents. However, the lawyer asked for five hundred dollars that Hom could not pay.

Lae, whose heart was breaking for her son, gave James all of her gold just to get her boy back. Finally, after ten months, the papers came in from Washington, which gave Hom and Lae the right to have their son. When Hom and Lae went to the school to find Little One, who had been given the name “Little Kim” by the caretakers of the school, Little One did not recognize his mother. He told his mother to “go way, go way.” Beyond the story, there is a message to immigrants, which is that once they enter the United States, they believe that they will have a wonderful life.

This is not always true. Also, Sui Sin wants the immigrants to understand that the happiness and hope may switch into sadness because they could face a difficult situation that is similar Hom and Lae’s story. As many immigrants do, I also thought that the United States is similar to the Hollywood world. However, I found that the United States is a difficult place to live in because of the different cultures, values, and religions. To me, all of these constraints makes the United States the “Land of the Prison.”
