What aspects of these short stories reminded you of earlier readings in this course? There is the aspect of conflict and plot development in the stories that are similar to the other readings. What issues or concerns reappear in contemporary guise? What are some of the differences in how those concerns get represented? What seems to have changed? Or not? The issue of race and isolation reappears in a contemporary guise. In these short stories, the concerns become represented more as the casts go through these issues regularly.

Nevertheless, in these short stories, there exist significant relationships between the people of different races. What is that meanness, the narrator talks about at the end of the short story Brownies, and why does she remember her experience of her father in the story? How her father’s behavior does reflect the girl's experience at camp? The meanness is racial segregation. She recalls this experience as it was the point where her dad was mean to the white Mennonites. The father did not receive the Mennonites well despite them helping him in painting the porch.
