Book Review: Literary Journalism THE OLD SOFT SHOE By Sarah Larson The book talks about Hermes, the artistic director who sat beneath the stained glass windows of the Gallim Dance Ceremony. The ceremony was to be held at the St. luke and St. Matthew church located in Brooklyn. The choreographer sat beside him who made various plays mainly focusing on the Political and Social aspects of life. The author goes on to describe the environment around the director while everyone was preparing for the play. The dancers were warming up while another person was busy choosing the shoes and bags that were to be used for the play. The book is a complete narration of a play and how it takes place. This book cannot be considered as a literary journalism because it does have a story line but only a fictional approach to the characters of the play. The author talks about the various plays that were performed and the issues that were discussed though these plays. 2) ICELAND AIRS Ragnar Kjartansson’s performance pieces The book is a combination of various plays by Ragnar Kjartansson taken from Norway. It also features some discussion of movies such as the “Morosoga” which means “The Murder Story”. This movie was made in the year 1977 and is seductive in nature where a woman tries to seduce a plumber. Through these narrations the author tries to bring into notice the issue of anti-smoking policies of NewYork. These stories are transformed into plays and shown to the viewer along with musicians to put on the theatrical effect. The musicians were recruited from New York itself and most of them used to be workers from different fields. According to me, this book cannot be called a literary journalism as the book is a mere description of the various plays and movies done by the author. There is no dramatical touch to it to bring out the storytelling part in it. 3) THE URBAN WILD By Amy Waldman This book is about an architect called Jeanne Gang who gained recognition because of her innovative and natural designs. The book starts with a scenario of a pool which has 2 dolphins by the name of Kai and Shadow. They are two Atlantic dolphins and very jovial in nature. These two dolphins perform in front of the crowd every week and attract visitors to the Texas State Museum. The reason for hosting the show is to spread the awareness of saving the planet. Jeanne Gang on the other hand has a different viewpoint. For her is the popularity of her designs that matter to her. She is already thinking about the new offer to design the National Aquarium in Baltimore. In this case, the book is somewhat literary journalism as in some parts of the book there has been extensive story telling which ensures that the interest of the reader is preserved time to time while some parts comes back to a simple narration of the current issues. 4) LONG STORY SHORT By Dana Goodyear The book is about the fictional attributes of an author called Lydia Davis who wrote a letter to a Frozen Peas manufacturing company. The letter contained the details of the quality of the peas that were sent to her. The author gave such intrinsic details to the description that one to could practically visualize the items in front of them. The narrator says that Ms. Davis usually had this kind of ability to notice the minute things in an item and write about them. These things would normally go unnoticed by any normal person, but while reading about them the writings were sure to leave an effect. Again this book can somewhat be called as literary journalism though most of the part has been discussed and described in a fictional manner. The starting of the book is a like a starting of the story and only when the authors starts to reveal the truth, we start to learn about the book. 5) MAN AND MACHINE By Susan Orlean The book is about two personalities Jacob Bakkila and Thomas Bender. Both of them were very good friends and very mischievous. However, they became very popular online with some of the famous examples being Pronunciation book and Horse e-book. After they grew up they both worked in separate firms. They had several projects under their name. Jacob Bakkila is a creative director at Buzzfeed and designs sponsored posts for various famous firms. Thomas Bender on the other hand works as a freelance tech. The book talks about the lives of them and how they came up with projects that went on to become millions of views. This book is based on literary journalism as the story telling part has been done very interestingly in this part. The two characters have been portrayed very nicely and how they went on to become popular has been shown nicely. Throughout the book the author tries to understand the reason behind them being so popular. 6) A TALE OF A TUB By Patricia Marx The author in this book talks about leaving the hectic day to day lifestyle that we have today and going somewhere cool and calm. The author is about taking those regular burdens off and having the time to read Moby dick than actually talking about it. He is talking a trip in a freight carrier and he is very much excited about it. The author will be travelling the vessel for three weeks and will be travelling from Philadelphia to Hamburg. So the whole idea of the book is living the lifestyle of a free person with no ties and commitment. The book cannot be said to be a literary journalism because the author here is making his own statements with no other characters in the book. The book is a little hard to have a flow of reading because of the different words used which are little too high on the vocabulary of a normal man. 7) MOZZARELLA STORY By Calvin Trillin The book is about Joe who was known by the author right from his childhood. The person was famous for his Mozzarella Story. The author talks about the life led by Joe, what he was like in his childhood, his actual name and how he became a Mozzarella cheese maker. The individual who steadily developed acclimated to being called Joe after 1977 was named Anthony Campanelli. From conception until well into adulthood, he existed in a walkup condo over the store. At the point when Joe chose to come back to the Old Country, Anthony, then a secondary school senior, was his low maintenance partner. This book can be called as a literary journalism as it is a complete story of a person named Joe. The author took the liberty and time in discussing each and every aspect of Joe in the best possible way and even named the book after his specialty. 8) BEASTLY APPETITES By Dana Goodyear The book is about a girl called Crystal Galbraith who is vegan and loves to feast of animals. She is a vegan activist with bleached blonde hair and mole under her right eye. Everyone used to call her ‘Skinny bitch’ in her college. She claimed that she used to eat normally during the lunch time but when it was time for dinner she used to become a vegan. The story revolves around this character and her interest for animals that she loves to eat. She later plans to act in the movies and also meets a person who was a part of “Pirates of the Caribbean”. This book is also into literary journalism as it is a story of a person Crystal Galbraith who is a vegan. The book tells many fictional incidents that are faced by the character and how she is interested in the animals she loves to eat. 9) GOOD RAYMOND By Richard Ford This book is about Raymond Carver who used to be a simple man and friend of the author until he became the most celebrated short story writer of America. The author describes the lifestyle of Ray how they had met on a casual encounter of drinking together and how Ray never realized his talent for writing. Ray had got married in 1977, and had two teenage kids. He had controlled on his drinking after a long try over and over. Later on the author had invited him to a writer’s festival where he was given the opportunity to write and rest is history. The book is not exactly a literary journalism because the author here talks about himself and Raymond Carver the person who became the world’s most famous short story writer. The author talks about this person’s life history, what he was in the early stages of his life. 10) COOKING WITH DANIEL By Bill Buford The author in his book talks about Daniel and how he became a chef. The books tarts with the narration of Daniel as he used to stay with his parents in the farm house and how everything that was cooked would be coming from their own farm. Then one day Daniel was questioned by his father as to what did he want to become when he became elder. His answer was Chef or a Jockey. He was not sure of either but then his sister had the contacts and she helped Daniel in getting his first job in a 2 star restaurant. The book is a literary journalism by the author as all the characters have been portrayed in characters and Daniel’s life story has been shown interestingly in the form of a fictional story. The author has successfully created a flow of his writing in making the reader understand Daniel’s life history as a chef. Works Cited: Goodyear, Dana.
