First Sur Mayday on Payday She has taken care of me since the grisly accident that landed me into the record books as an orphan. Dejected and hopeless, she has been my source of consolation ever since. Over the times that I have known her, I gained an unusual respect coupled with the fear of the unknown for my sister. A few kilograms short of obese; I call Tamara ‘the rolling ball’- behind her back though. At a first glance, you may think she is the human version of a cat; softly purring and always looking sleepy.

In the real sense, Tamara is my biblical ‘wonderfully and cheerfully made.’Physically, she has thick, shiny and wavy hair that gracefully braces her shoulders, and surrounds her diamond-shaped long face. Her clear complexion would quickly make you conclude that she is a past candidate for the much controversial cosmetic surgery. With a suntan so golden, your eyes are likely to notice her high cheek bones first. While reacting to her surrounding world, her arched chestnut brown eyebrows gave way to her popping eye as she moves up and down highlighting her emotions.

I am used to staring right into her large deep blue eyes. It strengthened the bond between me and her; especially, now that she is the only guardian I have. Besides, the eyes remind me of a storm-dominated lake. She has this curved nose that gives her a young girl’s look and makes me grin each time she talks. Her small and round mouth gated with puffy lips is often accentuated with a glossy red lipstick. When she smiles, her facial features exaggerate making the whole face to fill up like a puff ball save for her white teeth that neutralize the exaggeration.

Judging by her façade, Tamara is adorable, and I, in particular, am head over heels in love with her.On this torrid summer morning, Tamara and I are set to collect her salary for the ending month from her employer. As I waited for her to clad, I felt quite anxious and uneasy. The thought of money and the gifts, and everything good that comes with money could not let me settle. My heart beat in excitement and my soul hummed the indiscernible rhythms of a bride seconds before the kiss. Finally, she comes out, and as usual, she always clad to impress.

But again, just like any other corporate lady out there, her clothes are classy and formal. When it comes to clothing, Tamara is somewhat picky. She is not the type you expect to put on any clothes- dark clear, soft, sportive or cheap. Most of her clothes are the expensive and tight-fitting ones.Even on this day, her plain red dress is modern-princess. You would easily mistake her for an angel descending the stairs in her prom dress. The dress fit snugly around each curve on her body neutralizing her otherwise somewhat exaggerated body features.

Similarly, her flat black shoes complemented the dress in a way only a fashion designer could explain. Sassy and classy, it was time to leave for the pay.The weather was relatively moderate, the sky unusually blue and the atmosphere calm, and the streets busy as usual. Tamara strutted along as I followed closely behind her as a master and his dog does. The ferry heading to the opposite side of the lake was about to leave so we hurriedly got in. The Ferry, ‘Mighty Warrior’ was an old, rusted but stable pile of metals that has operated across the Lake Ganges for decades.

The journey was smooth until the storm took over the lake. Unluckily, Jesus was physically absent, and our ‘Mighty Warrior’ could not fight anymore the storm threatened to tear the vessel apart. Tamara’s blue eyes grew pale, my heart beat, the other crew, screamed; the ferry was slowly but surely capsizing. Dazed and confused, I could only hear, “Mayday! Mayday!’ as I leaned on Tamara’s chubby arms.Work CitedWest, Bailey. Developing Writing Skills. Ontario: Prentice-Hall, 2011
