In this book, Beegle identifies poverty by many different life situations which are characterized by situational and economic inadequacy such as generational, immigrant, situational and working-class poverty. Beegle wants her readers to understand that people living in poverty can come out of it since it is not a permanent state of life. However, this can only happen if they want to. By sharing her life story, readers understand how she was able to rise past her poverty situation which was very extreme. Despite having five of her brother incarcerated and with poor parents, she was able to achieve doctorate level of education. She notes that breaking poverty barriers requires a mind that does not judge so that it is easy to connect with other people in the society. With the adequate connection, one increases communication and this is key to breaking poverty barriers. She also wants policymakers, legislative and other people concerned with the welfare of people living in poverty to realize that the best solution to breaking barriers of poverty is by going directly to the poor people who are at the root of poverty and addressing it from there.
