The Fredrick Douglas Quote ““I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule of others, rather than to be false, and to incur my own abhorrence.” reflects my true nature, as a person. The quote shows that selfish interests should be prioritized over the interests of other people. In the story of Amy tan, she wanted to act like an American. She was so frustrated that she was born a Chinese. She felt that her being a Chinese was holding back the realization of Robert, the pastor’s son to fall in love with her. Her mother kept telling Amy Tan, during her growing up years, that she should never exchange her Chinese cultural heritage with the American way of life. She should accept her Chinese culture with a high head and a proud heart. During the pastor’s visit, the pastor brought his son, Robert to dinner. Amy was so excited. However, when her father removed the fish cheek and proudly stated that Amy’s favorite part of the fish is the cheek, Amy felt so ashamed of her Chinese heritage. She observed her father espouse Chinese ideals to the American Pastor’s family, stating they should state they like the Chinese food. Likewise, Amy Tan’s mother kept reminding Amy Tan that she should proudly display and implement her Chinese culture even though they, especially Amy Tan are in the midst of the American visitors. When Amy Tan grew older, she realized and accepted what her mother had been telling her. Amy Tan finally accepted her Chinese culture, no longer being ashamed or angry of her Asian heritage. In the above Amy Tan story, Amy Tan is sad because she thinks that whatever her parents, especially her mother, about one American family, Amy Tan concludes that all American families have similar cultures, a culture that will not have a beautiful blend when the Chinese culture and the American culture are combined. Challenging the above argument. However, the above Frederick Douglas quote does not hold true in all situations. Just like in real life, there are times when people have to break the policy, regulation, concept, or rule. Such violations are allowed if the breaking of the normal or accepted acts or avoidance of acts will have a better outcome when compared to complying with the popular or accepted doctrines. For example, a mother decides to violate the community park’s sign stating “keep off the grass”. The mother feels that its far better to be punished for violating the “keep of the grass” policy if by doing so she will be able to retrieve her one year old child, who escaped from her arms and crawled onto the prohibited park grass areas. In the same light, it is alright to violate Frederick Douglas’ concept if circumstances do permit such violations. Qualifying the argument. However, not all individuals have the same ideology as Fredrick Douglas. For example, George Orwell abhors how the Burmese people treat Europeans. He feels that he is not like the other average Europeans. George Orwell does not espouse the idea of Europeans being tyrants. Thus, he does not act like the average European. He tries to avoid any act that will make the Burmese people Angry. However, the Burmese people have a common concept of what a European individual acts. To the Burmese people, the Europeans are oppressors. Thus, George Orwell is branded and “found guilty” of being an abusive European even though he had not done any crime or hurt any Burmese individual. In fact, as a police officer, one Burmese individual tripped Orwell several times while playing a football game. The Burmese audience howled in laughter at the incident because the referee did not see the tripping incident. This really angered Orwell because the Burmese referee was unfair. Because of the Burmese people’s anger over the British colonizers, they exert all efforts to make the Europeans unwelcome in their native land, including the Orwell incident during the football game (http://www.online-literature.com/). In the above Orwell story, the people are applying deductive reasoning. Most of the Burmese people believe that since Europeans are generally tyrants, then they conclude that George Orwell, a good police officer, is also a tyrant. This reasoning is not correct all the time. There are exceptions, especially in the case of George Orwell. However, some people are in favor of Fredrick Douglas’s concept. Helen Keller loved to be herself when she was a child. Helen Keller wrote in her autobiography that when she was a child in 1880, during the Civil War movement, she would proudly dominate and control her African American home companion, the home cook’s African American child. Keller’s father was a Confederate Army Captain. Consequently, Martha Washington obeyed Helen Keller’s compulsory commands to avoid Helen’s childhood retaliatory measures (Keller 11). Analysis of the Argument reasoning process. Further, my argument does not change. In every rule, policy, or concept, there are always exceptions. Thus, I accept those exceptions. However, the general concept espouse by Frederick Douglas still stands on its steadfast and unwavering location. There were no problems encountered during the process of creating the essay. Furthermore, I made two major changes in accomplishing the paper. First, I started by disagreeing with Frederick Douglas’ concept. Next, I used the George Orwell story to prove that the Frederick Douglas quote was correct. After editing the completed paper, I realized my unintentional reasoning error. Thus, I revised the paper to its current argument stand. Conclusion: In addition, of all the parts of the essay, I am most proud of offering evidences to defend my argument. The three stories of Amy Tan, George Orwell, and Helen Keller are given to prevent both sides of the argument. However, the evidences will overwhelmingly convince the readers of this essay to accept my stand on the issue. Summing the above discussion, the argument essays focus on presenting a stand.
