24 October Story Continued Anna kept visiting Gurov frequently for several months to follow. Meanwhile, Von Diderits went to Spain for an official visit with his company. He told Anna that he would be back in two months. Two months changed into four months, and four into eight. Von Diderits never returned. Von Diderits never called Anna from Spain. Anna searched for him a lot but all her efforts went in vain. She even filed a case with the police, but the police couldn’t find Von Diderits either.

Anna started believing that Von Diderits was dead. She thought Von Diderits might have been caught in a tragic accident which was why he never contacted her. She knew he didn’t love her very much, but she also knew that he loved her at least as much to call her and tell her of his whereabouts had he been alive. Meanwhile, Gurov moved over to Anna’s place to console her while she worried about Von Diderits. Gurov chose to move to Anna’s place rather than calling Anna to Moscow so that he could spend time with her openly as nobody knew him in Anna’s city.

Cohabiting provided Gurov and Anna a way to explore their love for each other. After a relationship of more than a year, both were still confused about the nature of their love for each other to the extent that neither of the two knew what point their relationship would eventually lead them to. Both Gurov and Anna were sure about one thing, that they would not marry each other, not at least in the short run. Both had different reasons for avoiding marriage, which further confirmed the confusing nature of their relationship.

Anna did not want to marry Gurov immediately because although she believed that Von Diderits was dead, she thought he might be alive since the news was not confirmed. Still, she did not want to think that she would never marry Gurov because she and Von Diderits did not have a fulfilling marital relationship either. So even if he showed up someday, Anna was doubtful that she would be quite as pleased as a wife ought to be for having found her long-lost husband. On the other hand, Gurov wanted to avoid marriage because he was very sincere with Anna.

He was sincere with her to the extent that he could not imagine tricking her into marriage and then flirting with other women along with her. Although their relationship so far was not much different from a flirt either, at least Gurov was being honest by not committing to Anna. While they cohabited, Gurov wanted to make love to Anna more than Anna did. Anna eventually gave up when he insisted. Anna showed reluctance because she thought that she had started her relationship with Gurov at another level.

What she initially liked about him was his companionship when the two used to observe the sunset in Yalta at Oreanda. For Anna, it was the natural beauty of the sunset that used to be the focus of discussion between the two. Anna liked him because his soothing and pacifying words added to the tranquil appeal of the sunset scenery. Anna respected Gurov as an intelligent elder. His body had nothing to do with any of it. But for Gurov, Anna was just another girl whom he could seduce into having sex with him, that he actually managed to do with Anna successfully sometimes.

While they cohabited, Anna thought that she had completely lost the person she had originally started liking. Gurov was hardly any different from Von Diderits who had convinced Anna into marrying him with his soothing poetry but after the marriage, lost all interest in Anna but her body. Likewise, Gurov had originally impressed Anna with his excellent verbal skills, but the relationship between the two had eventually boiled down to just sex. But the reason Anna still chose to live with Gurov and that made Gurov different from Von Diderits was that Gurov was at least honest enough not to enter into the marriage contract with Anna when he was not committed enough.

But this was not enough for Anna. Anna was under the guilty feeling of betraying her husband who might be alive. Anna finally decided to part ways with Gurov, and that night’s set marked the end of their confusing relationship with each other. Gurov left for Moscow. The next day, Von Diderits showed up. He told Anna that he had been suspicious about Anna’s regular gynecological visits to Moscow, and had resolved to check her by telling her that he was leaving for Spain. He said that he felt good never to love her truly because she didn’t deserve it.

Von Diderits divorced Anna.
