of Topic: How effective is management style in business Demonstrate understanding of difference between originality and plagiarism (200 words) Originality means that the author of writing or a work of art has contributed something new or fresh idea to the continuing body of knowledge and he or she fully given credit to whom or to which credit should be due whether as person or entity on ideas contained in such writing or work of art. Plagiarism, on the other hand, violates the concept of originality and one merely steals the idea of others and the said authors pass to others as their own without acknowledgment of the true owners of the knowledge1. Originality is directly related to new invention and which would deserve to be protected by law.2 Thus original works need to be copyrighted so that these owners could assert ownership and from which charge of plagiarism could prosper. Copyright therefore bestows exclusive right to publish one’s work unless other entities are authorized the copyright owner.3 On other hand, persons who plagiarized deserves but the condemnation of the academic world and even in the legal world at it would be working against the idea of giving credit to whom it is due and the continuity of creativity arising from the originality in the work of writers or artists. Originality encourages creativity while plagiarism therefore discourages the same. 2. Explain the process used to develop research question (150 words). To develop a research question requires working with the objective of searching for an answer to a question that needs to be addressed from so that decisions-makers can be guided accordingly. Given that job realities in organizations are not the same and that there are different kinds of people and there are different kinds of tasks can be made in an organization, it can be assumed that each type of attitude or management style to each business situation must exist. Each management style can either be autocratic, paternalistic, democratic and ‘laissez-faire type’.4 As to whether employment of one style over the other styles will have an influence or effect in business is something can be answered by asking how people really feel on the matter. The process therefore involves observing first on what determines success of organization and whether the art of consulting employees in their jobs does matter to organizations. Reducing the problem into a research question on whether management style influence business would appear the most appropriate thing under the situation. 3. Explain the difference between description and analysis. (150 words) In a description, one depicts something by telling in answering the what, when, where and who type of questions5 while analysis answers normally the how questions why type questions for presenting information to the reader of a written work like a thesis or a dissertation.6 Description may just be citing the facts but does not employ any inference or deduction in order to present the information. There is therefore no creation of new knowledge in description but would sound just tell what really happen, who did things, where it happened and when it happen. Sometimes, the how question is answered in descriptive presentation if what is meant is just being factual. Analysis therefore extends that can considered descriptive. It tries to make new knowledge or higher levels of the same by deduction or application of rules of logic and readers will have effect of understanding the relationship of things or variable from a deeper perspective. To cite an example in ethnography, marriage, may be described as an arrangement of customary activities between opposite sex that starts with dating and ends in a ceremony. Explaining why marriage for one culture may different with other cultures in relation to other variable would result to analysis as way of presenting the information.7 4. Explain the choice of data and justify its inclusion within the project (200 words) The data chosen for inclusion to the project include answer to the following questions: (1). Are you employed in a company? This question is answerable by yes or no. (2) How long have you been with the company? This question is answerable by number of years? (3) How long the company you work with has been in existence? This question is also answerable by number of years. (4) Are you consulted regarding most of the times regarding your job? The question is answerable with the words: always, most of the times, sometimes, seldom, and never. 5. Describe the nature of your employer’s business? The question is answerable by service-oriented, product- oriented, and both service and product oriented. The choice of data has something to do with the research question to be answered. Answer to the first question on whether respondent is employed captures the need whether respondent could be considered part of the data to be analyzed and evaluated in answering the research question on how effective management style in business is. Asking how the respondents or interviewees length of stay in their company in the second question would provide a measure of success from the employees’ point of view. The premise of the question is that that an employee that stays longer must have enjoyed his or her stay in the company. Answer to the third question would mean that a longer company’ stay in business should tell about the stability of the company as a measure of success. Answers to forth question would tell about the management style employed the company on whether it is autocratic, paternalistic, democratic and ‘laissez-faire. Answer to the fifth question would see how management style, success of the business and nature of the service could be interrelated. 5. Analyze and evaluate the data collected related to research question (500 words). From the respondents answer to the questions, most of answer yes whether they are employed since and this would mean that there is a very employment in the place where the survey was conducted. Answers to the second questions showed that majority of the respondents who admitted that they are employees have at least more than five years of service in the company and only twenty present with less than one year, while another twenty percent of employed respondents has rendered between 1 to 5 years. It could therefore be deduced that majority have enjoyed their stay in their companies for more than five years and this could be considered as evidence of loyalty to the company. When related with the length of their employer’s business existence, it was found that many employees have stayed long with the company with have shown stability and resilience in operation through the years. This is logical at it could be very unlikely to have stayed long with just newly established companies or those which have not shown more than five years of existence. The answer to the fourth question necessarily gives information on the style of management employed by the company. The styles would include that of being autocratic where managers make all the decisions as far as the jobs of their subordinates are concerned.8 When correlated with answers to the fifth question, it was found that more employees are less consulted in product oriented rather than the service oriented alone and on both service and product oriented business. This means that the business adopts a certain style of management depending on the nature of the business. This could be explained by the amount of discretion of the product manufactured of the companies. The employer in product manufacturing therefore applies the autocratic and paternalistic style of management rather than democratic one or the ‘laissez-faire’ one. However it was found that employees where there is autocratic environment have employees who have spent less number of years compared with the companies where there is greater freedom from employees in terms of decision-making in the performance of their functions to the organization. It was found that democratic style of management is present in service-oriented organization rather than the product-oriented business. This would mean the service oriented businesses considerer the full satisfaction of customers who have different taste as compared with products which assumes standardized products. Among the respondents there is only one who answered that they can do their own thing as far as their works or jobs are concerned. This would mean that there are only few employers who just let their employees do their own thing. Most of the respondents also answered the most of the times they are consulted which would mean the normal business in the surveyed area employed democratic management style compared to paternalistic style where managers may prefers to make all the decisions. In paternalistic style, managers appears inclined to knowing what is best for employees. There is none of the respondents who answer they were never consulted. This would mean the absence of autocratic style of management In democratic style, employees participate in decision and thus the communication between managers and their employees or subordinates is two way. Most of those who have stayed more than five years were having democratic style of management. 6. Conclusion Based on the answers of respondents, it could be concluded that management style is a choice that must have to be made depending on the nature of the situation or the objectives to be met by organization. It was found out clearly that democratic style thrives most in service-oriented business rather the other business with other orientations. Length of stay of the company speaks of level of satisfaction of employees and the related length of the companies’ stay in business that measures also business success. No wonder companies adjust to demands of their environment by adopting a particular style of management in relation to their objective to stay and grow in business.
