Performance is defined by Bhattacharyya as “the degree or extent to which employee applies his/her skills, knowledge, and efforts to a job assigned to him/her and the result of that application” (2011, p.54). He thus defines performance appraisal as “a formal process for evaluating the performance of employees in terms of achieving organizational objectives” (Bhattacharyya, 2011, p.54). Nankervis, Compton, and Baird (2002, p.56) define performance appraisal as “a systematic process by which employee’s performance is evaluated”.

It entails the evaluation of “employees’ performance based on the opinions and judgments of supervisors, workers, managers, peers, and subordinates” (Jackson & Schuler, 2003, pg. 455)One of the most frustrating rituals that are creating conflict between the supervisors and the subordinates in cases of improper implementations is the employee appraisal system. Similarly, for the healthy survival of companies in this competitive world, employee performance evaluation is a vital tool in maintaining the correct pace for the everlasting customer demand for quality as well as unparalleled service.

Thus, it is through the process of an effective system of employee performance evaluations that we will drive the staff towards optimal development and improvement. The data related to the performance appraisal can be regarded “as a basis for various employment decisions regarding training, promotions, merit enhancement as well as transfers” (Gul et al, 2010, p.505).In assessing the critical evaluation of the performance appraisal system in the modern globalized world, we must consider some aspects of varied trajectories.

The trajectories can fragment into three different channels namely:Recent trends have been the emphasis on the public sector performance appraisal structure with the import of the private sector management methods of the objective setting, performance appraisal, and that of the merit pay.
