Organizational Commitment to Diversity in Today’s Corporations Introduction Google Inc Google Inc is a global organization which has strong practices in diversity. The global company is known and used by everyone across the world. Google thrives on diversity both externally and internally. Google tends to employs diverse people in its work force because of its customer base which is also very diverse and hence the symbiotic relationship makes Google successful organization (Ganly, 2010). In today’s corporate world, web sites are an important channel of communication between organization and their external stakeholders. If an organization is serious about its commitment to diversity, one would expect that this would be reflected in the design, content and graphics of the web site. Potential employees, customers, suppliers, etc. often turn to the website before initiating interaction with an organization. If diversity is really integral to the mission and values of an organization, information on diversity should be easily accessible, informative and well-integrated into the website. Diversity at Google In response to the above statement, Google mission is to organize the various amount of information and make them universally useful and accessible. This implies that the mission statement is diversified and it thus well integrated in its website. Diversity has a long history in Google, right from its founders and employees who knew that it was the right way to build the company. Starting from Alan Eustace, who launched the Anlta Borg Scholrship in the year 2004 to formation of global network for the employee such as “Google Women Engineers” diversity efforts made at Google are “bubbling up and trickling down” since its inception (Google, 2010, 5-6). Google Website and Diversity Factors Analyzing Google website, it can be seen that the company website inculcates every bit of information which might be required by potential investor or customer and the suppliers. The mission statement is highlighted boldly on the website and talks about the universally accessible and useful information that it aims to provide to its customers. The website of Google, in particular the home page provides a direct link to every category stated in the site. The site provides direct link to the culture of Google and Googlers which indicates the work diversity it has in its organization. The location, about the management team, believes of the company and what Google actually does is all stated clearly in its site. In addition to the above, the various products and services that Google offers are also clearly mentioned on the home page of Google (Google-a, n.d). Diversity related material includes culture, location and the management team and along with it believes of Google and Googlers also can be referred to as diversity related materials. Google is known for its diversity in work culture and hires people from different culture and work hard in order to ensure its commitment towards diversity and build everything that Goggle does, from recruiting employees and building the work culture to running the business and developing the product, services and tools. Google celebrates a wide culture of diversity and forms an essential component at Google culture. Among the various celebrations that take place at Google such as Veteran’s Day, Black History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, LGBT Pride, Google has also developed few traditions and celebrations for the Googlers and people who are part of Employee Resource Groups (Google-b, n.d). Diversity initiatives at Google focus mainly on three main areas, to change the technology industry; to create a work place and to empower diverse business along with communities online. In addition to the culture diversity, Google also celebrates diversity with its Google Doodles (Google-c, 2011). However the diversity in relation to Google Doodles is not directly shown in the website of Google and there is no direct link from the home page. But by saying so it does not mean that information about diversity in Google are not available. By entering the term “diversity” for Google many information based on diversity is displayed which tells about the diverse work culture and the work force that Google has and how important diversity mean for the company and its people. When we enter diversity in relation to Google, many results occurs without exploring much for the required information. Information based only on diversity and inclusion of Google is easily displayed along with other diversity related information. And all the related information is from its website, www.google.com/diversity, making it easier for the potential customers, employees and suppliers to get all the relevant information which are required for the purpose of doing business and getting an overview about the organization. Analyzing the website and finding that most of the diversity related information is made easily available and no extra effort need to be made in accessing the information it can be said that, Google is serious about its commitment towards diversity and is very well reflected in the company’s website and other related pages of Google. In addition Google also issues annual report which is based only on diversity and inclusion, indicating the importance of diversity at Goggle. Google is a multinational corporation and operates in various countries across the world and as a result it is natural to develop a preconceived idea about the organization and its work place diversity even before the company was investigated. The preconceived ideas highly met with the actual idea that Google does with regards to diversity and its work place and culture. Google has always been known for its work culture and every person wishes to work with company like Google which value its employees, customers, suppliers more than anything and Google has always been in news for its culture diversity and is among the most popular organization located in various locations. Thus it was natural to develop a preconceived notion about Google and its diversity program and it must be said that the preconceived notion build was not disappointed rather satisfactorily. Board of Directors/ Management team The board of director and the management team at Google are equally diverse and contribute towards the diversity program. Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the CEO and the founder of Google also practices diversity and belong to different educational background and work experience also. The management team constitutes of the CEO, Larry Page; executive chairman, Eric E Schmidt; Sergey Brin the co founder of Google; Nikesh Arora the CBO and Vice President; David C. Drummond, the Senior Vice President and Corporate Development and Chief Legal Officer along with other members who forms an important part of the board and the management team (Google-d, n.d). Evidence that shows Google supports diversity As stated earlier, Google is known for its diversity programs and it ensures to maintain the same in the current future. The founders and Googlers were highly committed to create workplace which intended to bring individuals from diverse background and where the employees would feel comfortable in giving their cent percentage towards work and that’s the reason why diversity is always defined in the broader possible sense. Nearly thirteen year age, Larry Page and Sergey Brin had established Google and set a mission to organize the information on global basis and make that information universally useful and accessible. Google has always worked on the guiding principle and makes not only the product available globally but also encompasses the audience irrespective of gender, race, ideology, language, orientation and the level of ability. Google aims that through its continued effort it can help build technology which will be much more reflective of global population and more accessible to the needs, and in the process raise global awareness about issues of inclusion and diversity (Google, 2011). According to reports, Google donated $19million to about 150 organizations who are working on diversity program. Diversity for Google is something which it prioritizes beyond the headquarters based in California. The products, service and tools are used widely across the globe and the approach towards diversity reflects in its report, with tremendous support for diversity programs in 30 countries and 60 offices. Some of the programs which Google offers as part of its diversity program includes, in Asia Pacific: “Anita Borg Scholars Retreat” in China, Australia, and Korea; “Google Women in Engineering Award” in India; “Sum of Google Celebrations” which takes place in India, Australia, Taiwan, Korea and Singapore; “Google Asia Summit for Women” in Japan and others. In the region of Middle East & Africa and Europe: “Top Black Talent” organized in United Kingdom; “G(irls)20 Summit” held in France; “Women in Engineering Open House” in Poland; “Sum of Google Celebrations” in South Africa, Denmark, Kenya, Germany and Poland; “Pride Celebrations” in Amsterdam, London, Dublin, Madrid, Warsaw, Tel Aviv and Zurich among others places (Google-c, 2011). As part of its diversity program, some of the benefits which Google provides to its employees and identify new opportunities and growth which can serve unique needs for Googlers. From mother’s room to Prayer room, Google strives to provide Googlers with the benefits which they need to be successful. Some of the programs include day care, mother’s room, adoption assistance, baby bonding bucks along with other programs initiated for the employees. Thus diversity forms an important part of Google and along with diversity benefits and challenges are faced by organization. Diversity forms an inevitable part of company serving its consumers on global basis and Google is no different. There is various evidence which shows how diversity at Google leads to innovation. Google have recognized that diverse workforce leads to ideas which are diverse in nature and thereby listening to its employees and acting upon them, the company can reach its full potential. The benefits received through diversity are a much largest network of consumers which eventually leads to innovation. The diverse network of employees and customers helps Google to maintain as well as add an increased amount of culture and knowledge. Therefore to maximize the benefit of its diversity, Google should minimize the challenge cased due to diversity (Ganly, 2010). Conclusion In conclusion the website of Google tends to out show the diversity that is practiced at Google. The homepage shows every aspect that makes Google a diversified organization and the home page is directly linked with all the pages in relation to diversity such as culture, location, management team. The website of Google states that the diversity of partners and employees tends to serve as a foundation for Google and in a way serve the diverse stakeholders and customer globally.
