Managing self and others Introduction In the words of the famous Albert Einstein, he once expressed his thoughts that politics is relatively difficult compared to physics (Pang, 2013, p 16). Thus, it is possibly correct to state the same of the practice of management. Managing others is certainly not an easy activity although also not equally complex. That which occurs as simple and straightforward principles is deceptively difficult in implementing, as the course of the learning and development proved. The process of managing self and others is dynamic, as it requires the players and in occasions the rules to keep changing. Nonetheless, it is possible to approach the process strategically, with a proper understanding of the self and the expectations and goals in place, as well as, the others that you are managing. Managing the self begins with knowing yourself, in aspects of your motivations, strengths and your blind spots among others, which constitutes the strengths of the person (Pang, 2013, p 11). Thus, it is essential to establish a personal development portfolio to have a clear understanding of self as well as, create a procedural strategic approach to managing others in the practice. Personal development portfolio Knowing the self and clearly understanding yourself can prove remarkably challenging, as well as, enlightening process. The more nuanced and accurate I understand myself, the greater the chances of engaging my environment and the situations I face as I integrate my strengths in the activities. Notably, with the internal insight of self in hand, it is remarkably easy to facilitate and engage organizational culture, which facilitates the processes of surviving and thriving within varied cultures (Pang, 2013, p 21). For instance, to integrate what is the norm, the acceptable and expected, the purposeful development of self in observation as a skill and engaging communication accordingly facilitate the processes of gathering information. From these aspects, then create a comparison of the findings of the environment with the strengths goals and motivations of self accordingly to reflect the observations in the environment you are engaging. Executing this procedure creates a means of overcoming the obstacles that one would face in overcoming new working environment and the processes of engaging others in the management process. The procedures of engaging with the boss and peers in the working environment depend on the personal skills of influence and persuasion. Therefore, the personal portfolio creates a platform of mapping the personal strengths and weaknesses accordingly to understand how the actions you take influence the ability to engage others. Therefore, from this competency perspective, I believe I have the influential and persuasive quality in me, which keeps me competently engaging others in the practice. Understanding all these perspectives and points of consideration relates to the processes of managing self within the career development journey. The question to reflect and ponder upon in this level entails, how good are the skills of myself in understanding self and managing others. Additionally, what are the personal strengths possessed and that which I need to add? From these developments, it is observable that managing self-portfolio is an iterative and interesting cycle that facilitates continued evaluation of self from varied dimensions creating a better person of myself. The process of managing self and other is endless. The need to be aware of own behaviour and its influence on others is key. In observing the various considerations for the personal development processes, I note the following elements as crucial to my personal portfolio. Notable, these include the ability to influence and persuade others and myself. The portfolio incorporates the various activities and expectations featured for self-evaluation and development. In managing the self, I establish that keeping to date what is happening is also a key element of self-development. Personally, I engage varied responsibilities in daily routines, which requires the personal attribute to manning the aspect of time and keeping in hand with the trends within the professional continuum. A positive and “can do” attitude is another development factor to consider critically in the procedures of developing the self and managing others. Personally, I engage with multidimensional environment in the daily working continuum. Therefore, in ensuring that I have the latest developments and updates on the professional area is key to incorporating changes as they occur. The procedural management of these changes and incorporation of strategic developments to the success of the management process is key factor that facilitates the personal portfolio in growing me. Further, ensuring that aspects of own words, actions and behaviours factor in and support the opportunity of diversity in culture within the organisation is another element incorporated accordingly within the portfolio. Feedback is a constructive aspect that facilitates the growth process of the individual in growing towards achieving their personal goals as those of the organisation. Goals are a key motivator to the processes of engaging self and others in the working environment (Pang, 2013, p 37). Therefore, keeping a diary of the objectives set in place, as well as, the timeline for achieving each of the goals is another factor of strength incorporated in the personal development portfolio. The notable element in this factor entails creating achievable goals and instituting the procedures for measuring the extent of achieving these goals in the working environment. Goals facilitate the establishment of a schedule to establish the measuring of the success in managing the self, as well as, others. Therefore, the feedback structure in the chin of engaging others in the field and fulfilling personal goals is key to the personal portfolio, which factors in the development of the self. SWOT and Skills Audit In evaluating the personal skill in development, it is essential to factor the personal attributes that constitute both personal and professional development (Pang, 2013, p 47). The skill organisation of the person motivates the person creating the strengths the person in the working environment. Notably, some key skills that incorporate in my profile include that of establishing ability to manage vast workload. In the personal and working environment, workload proves to be the biggest challenge to manage as it affects the personal strength to handling stress and situations that require integrated personal interactions with peers. Therefore, to address the subject of increased workload is a skill that personally I strive to establish in delivering in the working platform. Additionally, managing workload facilitates the processes incorporated in engaging the peers as they participate actively in the processes of managing the working environment; hence, increased managerial and interpersonal relations skills. Another skill I strive to establish in the course of the personal portfolio development is the effective management and utilisation of time. Time is a constraint in various aspects as the failure to manage the available in the working schedule can impair the performance of the organization or the department. Additionally, it situations of increased workload, as well as, when working with deadline schedules, the personal reflection f skill in time management can adversely impact the delivery of services and completion of tasks. Therefore, the skill of time management is another component that constitutes my understanding of self, as well as, that of incorporating others in the management process. Notably, the time element affects the relations and attitudes that I posses towards the colleagues with whom we engage accordingly. Therefore, I strive to use this skill maximally to deliver to the goals and objectives set forth in the in the working continuum. Moreover, attitude is another factor of consideration that reflects accordingly in the portfolio development of the situation in consideration. The factor of establishment in this as a skill entails being in position to manage the development of the person as reflects in the working space, while engaging others, as well as, the course of situations that require courage to address. In this situational analysis approach to attitude, the notable element is that, as a person, I have a positive and “can do” attitude which is crucial to the process of managing self, situations affecting myself and where I engage in managing those relating in the field. Attitude affects the course of working, as it is key to meeting the goals set forth. For instance, in situations where the development case entails some task that proves remarkably challenging, it may prove difficult to address the case successfully without the proper attitude to approach the case. However, with possession of proper attitude and personal development stature towards approaching issues, it is simpler to address the cases that appear as though are too difficult. Additionally, the art of communication is another element that requires essential consideration in addressing the development of the self at the personal and professional capacity. Communication is a skill to master in the process of establishing key elements of management as an approach to managing others in the working environment (Pang, 2013, p 56). Personal and interpersonal relations can prove remarkably challenging as they reflect in the development of the personal ability to influence and persuade others. Communication appears as a skill, as well as, strength in the personal level from its ability to facilitate the processes of influencing decision making. Therefore, I personally believe I possess the communication ability to engage others at the various levels with a clear mind, irrespective of the differences that we may have in opinions and approaches to different cases. Communication facilitates the space to approach the conflicts in the organisation or department with a considerate element of appreciation for the differences; hence, achieving the ability to express oneself without incorporating emotions that would otherwise impair the communication process. Further, accepting and accommodating others is a personal responsibility that reflects in the way I express myself while engaging with the peers in the working environment. Another skill considered in this personal development process is consistency in following the words I speak with actions incorporated. This skill reflects the ability of self to develop in honesty and diligence of delivering to the promises they make. Personally, I delight in ensuring I meet the words I speak with the intending action as this facilitates the ability to meet the standards of engagement as required n the working environment. Motivation and honesty is key in this skill for facilitating managing self and others. The core of this procedural process of engaging the self is the need to meet a working environment that meets the objectives of the organisation. The need to meet the goals creates the platform for exercising the skill of ensuring actions follow the outlined instructions and procedures to the success of the activity in process. Strengths In evaluating the self, it is notable that personal attributes are key to the development and establishment of working relationships that facilitate the core development as the learning process helped me identify. In the behavioural considerations, I believe the following elements constitute the core strengths of establishing personal and interpersonal relations that help in managing self and others. These include the ability to participate cooperating with those I engage in the working field. Cooperating with those in the field is key in achieving the goals set forth as a team. Therefore, to manage the relations i have with others in the field, the attribute of personal ability to cooperate and participate actively is key to the success of the relations created in engaging those in the field. Another attribute that is key strength to the personal development entails that of being involved as a driving factor. Involvement describes the ability to interact with the others in the working environment successfully for the success of the entire team. This factor is key strength as it creates the essential element of teamwork approach to the strategic management of self and others. Further, I thrive in engaging tasks that prove challenging to my skills. Therefore, this attribute of engaging challenging tasks creates the attitude of an achiever in the working continuum. Therefore, the core attribute creates the ability to engage others and successfully encouraging them to participate in the tasks of the organisation or department with the same attitude of achieving. This attribute is key as t facilitates the processes of influencing others to participate accordingly. Further, it facilitates the processes of managing self and the others for the success of the goals in place within the organisation. The intrinsic engagement is key to the success of the personal attributes that constitute the strengths I posses, in addition to the skills in place. Weaknesses At the personal engagement level, personal attributes can prove remarkably challenging factors that drive the self not to meet the personal and working relations strategically. Personally, I identified that I have the attribute of being a perfectionist. This attribute in essence may appear as strength. However, when engaging others within the working environment, it is notable that diversity can prove a challenge to address in managing others. The aspect of diversity can influence the working relations as differences in opinion and approach to tasks may cause conflicts in aspects where I believe the approach I take is best for the task. Therefore, considering this element, I may stress on adopting my approach, which in effect influences the success of managing the others in the working environment. Another attribute considered a weakness is the autonomous approach to the processes of participation in a team spirit. The factor is key as it reflects to oppose the strength of cooperative participation. However, autonomous approach implies that I tend to rely on a given strategic approach to facilitate the accomplishment of the task in consideration. Therefore, once while managing other as a team we have a procedure proven as effective, I will tend to oppose challenge to try new techniques. This attribute of relying on regulated approaches to tasks may affect the processes of influencing and persuading others; hence, impairing the processes of managing others. Opportunities I believe I have the opportunity in increase on the personal attributes of the supportive approach to the challenges that others face. I believe I have the technical skill of communication. However, I need to develop the supportive approach, as it is key to the establishment of cooperative participation in the working environment. Working as a team requires support to facilitate the success of the team in achieving the set goals. Therefore, the core consideration will entail developing the ability to support the others as I engage in managing the self and others in the continuum of engagement. Threats The threat to the establishment of personal development is the aspects of the extrinsic factors that relate to the relations and working continuum. Notably, the extrinsic element for consideration in this core competency aspect is the appreciation and support from the people I will be engaging. Notably, in a working continuum, not all persons will walk in the same direction as the team foresees. Therefore, this establishment impairs the process of developing the self in managing others. The activity of influencing the others in the working environment requires essential consideration of the diversity in the team. Therefore, to grow the skills I posses and implement them accordingly in the managerial platform, I may face the challenge of opposition from the other team members. Additionally, supporting structures may also impair the processes incorporated in managing self and others as they reflect in the core competency areas of my professional and personal attributes. Learning Diaries In reflection of the learning process, the personal attribute development in managerial skills and attitudes is notably key milestone made in learning to manage self and others. The technical development of the self began from the introduced course outline as it reflects the outline of the course. The content was key as it facilitated the learning processes accordingly. For instance, in evaluating the learning process, a key area of consideration was the core competencies identified in the processes of managing organisation culture and relating with peers. The theories of management were core in establishing the position of the self in the management hierarchy. The learning development that facilitated the learning in relation to the self and others includes the human relations theory and the neo-human relations theory. These theories both focus on the core aspects for attention when relating to the peers in the working environment. The theories facilitated the learning and establishing of core competencies key to the personal development of the self. The motivation to gain an understanding of the personal development portfolio was evident as outlined in the course learning objectives. Leadership is a tool core in the identification and development of the personal profile in that facilitates creating notable and effective strategies of managing the self and others. The aspects of structure, practicality and prescriptive attitude were notable tools identified in the establishment of working personal relations with respect to identified managerial theories. Additionally, the elements of the course facilitators in the learning process also facilitated accordingly in identifying the personal strengths and weaknesses and procedures of addressing these developments in the personal portfolio. The core areas facilitated in the identification of the personal attributes and development of the skills needed in establishing working relations with self and peers at the work environment proved remarkably useful. The course content and intent of the theories and concepts of human resource relations are building pillars to the success of the established personal portfolio. Recommendations From the forgoing evaluation of self in the in the prospective strategic approach to managing self and others, the element of goal setting appears as key recommendation to factor in the processes undertaken. Learning is an experience that facilitates the building of knowledge, as well as, evaluating the levels of performance of the self for effective and successful incorporation of working strategies (Pang, 2013, p 69). Therefore, this evaluation prospect creates the element essential for factoring the recommendations that will further initiate the personal development to establish a successful approach to managing others. The process of setting goals entails establishing the core tasks or activities that we intend to achieve. In this consideration, the goals to set will facilitate the improvement of the skills and strengths that I possess as a person to reflect accordingly in achieving the intending levels and strategies of managing self and others. To incorporate, the element of goal setting in improving the weaknesses and capitalising on the opportunity for growth is also key to facilitate the personal development of the attributes for managing self and others. These developments will help in achieving a portfolio that reflects accordingly in the elements considered key to the working environment while engaging others. Further successes in engaging others include the process of creating relations with those we engage. Therefore, the recommendation to create personalised relations, which feature professional relations, is key to the success of establishing a working self and others management strategies (Pang, 2013, p 87). These strategies will facilitate the procedures of understanding the self, reflecting in self-development and engaging others successfully in the working environment. Conclusion The personal reflection of the strategic self-attributes is key to identifying and understanding the management skills and attributes that we possess. Additionally, it also facilitates identifying the portfolio we achieve and the areas of weaknesses needed to improve the core elements for the successful establishment of working relations from the learning diaries. Therefore, in consideration of these factors identified reflecting in the profile, it is possible to establish workable learning content that will further the course of the personal management skills for better and improved leadership and management strategies.
