The paper “Investment Management in Companies in Succession” is a breathtaking example of a management capstone project. Investment management is a profession in which various securities and assets are managed with the aim of meeting specific pre-determined goals for the benefit of the investor. In the field of investment management, investors can range from individuals to private investors and institutions like insurance companies and pension funds. This industry has several facets which include the provision of employment for the fund and asset managers, research into market trends and forces, dealing and settlement, marketing, auditing, and report preparation.

The most dominant fund managers exhibit the most complex within all the aforementioned facets. A simple breakdown of investment management shows that the main players in this industry are marketers who bring money, fund managers who direct investment, compliance staff who enforce legislative and regulatory constraints, internal auditors who critically examine the controls and internal systems of companies, financial experts who account for the company’s monetary issues and costs, computer experts and employees who conduct fund evaluations and record transactions within a company.

Global Investment Management Like most other industries, the investment management industry recorded a 10 percent increase in assets under management in 2010; the assets under management stood at 79.3 trillion US dollars. The key player in this industry was pension whose assets accounted for about 30 trillion US dollars of the total. Mutual funds and insurance funds both accounted for approximately 25 trillion US dollars each. The overall summation of alternative assets such as exchange-traded funds, sovereign wealth funds, and private equity funds, and funds of wealthy individuals was about 117 trillion dollars.

The growth in the investment management industry was majorly attributed to the recovery of equity markets and the introduction of new funds into the industry. Despite the encouraging success rates, this industry faces a vast array of challenges.
