I will be a full term, employee. The company offers consultation soft wares example business analysis, quality assurance, testing and training[Emt08]. As the manager, I will handle managing transactions and operations involving human resources that are carried out daily. As the manager my responsibilities will include: Managing employee relations such as creating stronger relationships between the employees if the situation demands. Secondly, have a clear understanding of the employment regulations as per the state laws, Emtec internal policies, personnel procedures and the benefits and compensation policies so as to advise Emtec associates accordingly. Thirdly, taking an active part in activities involving the employees’ such as recruitments, employee relations, compensation, employee performance management and workers’ benefits projects and programs. Fourthly, act as the mediator between the vendors and brokers with the aim of enhancing their relationships. Lastly, advise planning participants on the benefits, eligibility, enrollment and the features of the scheme. Professional skills that are required Firstly, high level of expertise in both written and verbal communication skills to help communicate effectively with employees. Secondly, the ability to make independent decisions based on sound judgments. Thirdly, the job will involve frequent interaction with senior executives thus I should be able to interact well with them. Fourthly, the ability to work effectively in a global and virtual environment. Lastly, training programs on customer service operations so as to interaction with customers easier and efficient. Principles of management Fayol’s 14 principles were the earliest to be created and considered most important. He published them in the book “Administration Industrielle at General”[Eyr15]. He also added the six functions of management. The theory is under the administrative management school of thought. These principles are as follows: Division of work- this leads to job specialization among workers. This increases their level of skill and efficient thus increasing output. Dividing duties among employees is the primary duty of a manager. Authority- managers have authority over their subordinates. It gives them power to control job related activities done by the other workers Discipline- For operations in an organization to run smoothly, the company’s policies should be adhered. Discipline in the organization is to be ensured. The means used to uphold discipline may vary from one organization to another. Unity of command- authorities in an organization should follow the chain of command system so as to ensure coordination and avoid miscommunication. Unity of direction- a unit intending to achieve a particular objective should work under a manager whose job is to ensure it achieves its target goals. This results into development of a plan to ensure proper coordination. Subordination of individual interests to the general interest. To ensure fairness, the interests of a particular employee should not be above the interest of the rest of the group. Remuneration-The satisfaction of the employees depends on the amount of money they receive. It may include financial and non-financial compensation. Centralization- this refers to the employees’ effect in masking decisions. It requires appropriate balance. Scalar chain- employees of an organization should know their position in the company’s hierarchy Order- a manager should ensure that there is order at place work that is it should be clean and tidy. Equity-managers should be fair to all the employees. This ensures unity. Equity is assured during the disciplinary action. Stability of tenure personnel. It is the duty of manager to minimize employee turnover. Initiative- the employees should have enough freedom to allow them to create and carry out plans. Espirit de corps this refers to the spirit ant unity in the organization. Attributes of an effective manager Most workers quit their jobs because of managers who have bad characteristics. To avoid this, a manager has to have a good quality that enable him or her to relate well to the other workers. The job of a manager is to ensure that employees work efficiently which in return develops their skills. Most managerial skills are got through training, mentoring and experience while others are natural to some individuals. Attributes of an effective manager are in two categories. Those that involve managing people and those that include the individual manager[Mar98]. Characteristics of a good manager are as follows: firstly, good communications skills. As a manager, one has to communicate organization’s goals and objective to the workers. For this to work effectively, the manager has to have good communication skills that include speaking and listening skills. This enables him/her to understand and process the information so as to increase organization’s productivity. According to Elizabeth Eyre[Eli15], poor communication leads to conflicts, quality problems, and loss of opportunities. Communications skills are got through team building activities. These activities involve giving a particular group of workers a task that they are supposed to work on it and produce good results. This helps in building the healthy work relationships between employees and managers. Also role plays assist in acquiring good communication skills[Hil15]. This involves the creation of a scenario where the participants act by the situation. Such events create brainstorming sessions that test and improve both the managers and employees communication skills. This activity builds up experience, self-confidence and communication skills. Secondly, leadership skills[Wil15]. Most managers attain their position due to their success in sales. This leads to inadequate managers who may not have the required leadership skills. A manager should have leadership attributes that will enable him or her give clear direction and delegate responsibility among the subordinates. This also helps in earning the trust of employees, customers, and other managers. Managers with good leadership skill tend to be successful in finding new opportunities for the business. Good management skills allow managers to seek opinions from other workers to solve challenges facing the company. Good leadership skills can be acquired through: seeking projects and events either big or small to manage so as to gain experience. Being involved in community activities. Official leadership training session such as the annual national leadership conference. Lastly, mentorship programs that involve working under a successful manager and learning from him or her. Thirdly, Adaptability[Wil15]. Many organizations have failed due to the inability of the manager to adapt to changes that are occurring in the business world. Managers should be able to adapt to changes and also help other workers adopt. This allows the manager to come up with creative ways of solving problems. A manager can acquire this skill through, professional development programs- the manager should be informed of skills and changing job requirements and environments. They can do this by learning new tasks, technologies and procedures. Learning to be flexible through job rotation- this is the ability to alternate roles. For example switching from being a leader to a team member which significantly influences the manager’s ability to adapt to changes. Also by learning other languages that enable a manager to be able to communicate effectively with workers or clients from countries. Lastly, understand the culture of the organization- before fitting in the organization as a manager, one needs to analyze the organization’s history, relationships, politics and power structure. Understanding these values allows you to adapt to the organization's workforce and work accordingly. Fourthly, building good work relationship with other employees[Wil15]. A good relationship with other employees enables them to work freely, and this yields good results. A manager should, therefore, create a good working relationship with his or her subordinates. This builds trust between them and boosts employee’s confidence in their job that enables them to work efficiently. Efficient operation is got through the following: conducting team building events. Also being persistent which shows subordinates that the manager focuses on achieving the goals and objectives of the company. Moreover, going on trips with a group of workers where you interact freely with the subordinates at a personal level. This allows them to know you which gives them the confidence to confront or correct you when you give a wrong direction to work. It also enables the manager to understand the employees and know how to relate to them effectively. Fifthly, developing others in the workplace[Wil15]. A manager should give employees equal opportunities to develop their skills through training. He/she ensure that training opportunities available so as to build on the workers’ talents that may in turn increase productivity. He or she may do this through, understudy method that refers to the act of having an employee under training to work under a manager that he or she is to replace. It serves as a means of training the employee and raising their self-confidence. It is an easy and efficient way of training new workers. Moreover, a manager can do so by making workers work together on an individual task that helps them learn from one another. Lastly, developing their individual characteristics[Wil15]. Effective managers need to understand that they need to grow continually and learn so as to develop themselves and others. It also serves as a means of encouraging the employees to do the same. Managers can use the following activities to improve themselves. Firstly, use of management games. The recent developments in technology has resulted in virtual games have been created to aid management. The games designs have similar conditions with those of the working conditions. The training improves both the individual and team performance due to the skills acquired from the game. Also, participating in organization development activities can help build management skills[Wil15]. The organization offers practical skills, knowledge and tools that are necessary to make management effective. Knowledge and skills required for the job First the job requires communication facilities due to the frequent interactions with the human resources of the company. It requires both verbal and written skills. These skills allow the manager to know what they want to say, how they are going to say it and provide listening skills to reach an agreement. Through reading and writing articles, I improve on my vocabulary giving me the ability to express myself better thus communicating better. I am also part of an organization that encourages participants to build on their communication skills and provides the opportunity to interact with new people[ZHe15]. Secondly, the job requires the ability to make independent decisions based on sound judgments. [Kel13] A cost-benefit analysis is done to weigh the pros and cons of every decisions’ outcomes so as to make a right decision. Cost-benefit analysis allow one to see the opportunity costs of one decision in comparison to the others. The cost-benefit analysis will narrow the options available thus making decision making easier. Research also assists in making decisions as this informs you on the options available which may lead to the decision making. At times, a personal well informed opinion may help in decision making. It should though not be used to direct the decision making. Thirdly, as the business is a global organization, there will be frequent traveling thus the need to adapt to the new business environments. The ability to communicate different languages will be of benefit in this. One can also deal with this through researching and experimenting with the new company environment. The experiments have been made possible through the creation of virtual realities[Mar11]. The research will help to anticipate such changes and act accordingly. One can also learn about the rules or ideas applied in the different places. Lastly, a positive attitude will go a long way in helping you adapt to the new environment. Customers are the primary purpose of an organization. It is the fourth point. It requires the manager to have essential skills so as to communicate effectively with them regarding customer service operations. These activities mainly involve dealing with customer complaints. The manager needs to be able to deal with such customers who may be violent at times. The manager deals with them by providing solutions in a truthful manner after listening and understanding the customer’s complaints. The first and last impressions of the manager to the client forms a basis of the nature of their interaction[Vin09]. The last idea is mainly important as it ensures the customer leaves having a positive feeling about the situation.
