?California San Bernardino Should we invade as a small or large group? Team The A Team Michael Palazzo, Eriana Hines, Ivonne Garcia, Kaixuan Shen, and Nada Alrumaih Management and Organizational Behavior and MGMT 302 Craig Seal July 8, 2013 Idea This present group is based on a small group versus a large group scenario. It seeks to show how a small group: develops more easily, how they operate more freely, how they use simple communication, how they receive higher satisfaction, how they make faster decisions, how they develop cohesion, how they have a lower turnover, how they have lower absenteeism, and how they have limited expertise. The group would thereafter indicate how these attributes compare to those of a larger group. In this regard, the group work will show how the larger group’s development is more complex, how they have less freedom to operate, how they use complex communication, how they receive lower satisfaction, how they make slower decisions, how they develop sub-teams, how they have a higher turnover, how they have higher absenteeism, and how they expand the group knowledge. The case scenario that will be used to achieve the above-mentioned objectives is about aliens landing on the planet Earth, first in a small group and then in large group. The study will explore how these different groups act differently and the differences in their behavior based solely on the number of members in each group. In the representation of aliens, the study will use action figures, dolls, and stuffed animals, among others. By doing this we can alter the numbers much easier than if we used real people. Also I believe these “actors” will be able to have a stronger personality and be able to switch more easily between a small group and a large group since it is only their voices, which will be used, and hence I feel everyone will not be holding back with shyness as much. The genre of the video will be strictly comedy. Therefore, the objective of the video is to make people laugh since we do not want our audience falling asleep and this is another reason why we used things like toys to represent human beings. We are going for a PG 13 to R rated Toy Story vibe based on how intense we can get. There will be a lot physical and verbal comedy based on random actions. For example, in the small group the aliens might be smoking marijuana because they have more freedom to operate, but in a large group you will see that there is less freedom to operate so if an alien starts smoking they will probably be fired. Performance Norms Effort In normal sense it is required that every group member should put in a 100 % effort, but as we know this is usually not the case in most group projects. However, the group leader is guaranteeing to put too much effort, to an extent that it will not matter if a few members of the group start to slack. The ideal situation is to have constant communication since this is the most important thing in a successful working relationship. We expect for everyone to text each other back as soon as possible after they receive a text from any group member and if any group member takes longer than a twelve-hour period or the member does not text back at all, he or she will be called upon to explain the lack of communication. We will ensure we stay on the set time schedule by working on a one single concept and this would eliminate the need to reshoot the scenes a bunch of times. We will get the filming portion done all in one day so there will be no chopping of certain scenes during the editing process and the plot of the comedy will remain consistent. It is expected that everybody will put their best effort in on that day and no one will be absent during this crucial day. We will not accept any excuses from our members for poor attendance. In addition, enthusiasm and initiative will be expected during the filming stage since failure will not be an option but nevertheless overall A effort is expected from everyone and anything less is frowned upon. Output It is expected that we will have a tremendous output because of the total input/effort we shall put in the project. We expect that at the end we will have the best quality video in the class and that our video will be the most creative and enjoyable to watch. Our team will have different sets of skills and knowledge about something, which means our output, will be diversified in a good way. We will take all our ideas and mix them together with a common goal and purpose thereby creating something fresh and interesting. Results The results from putting in so much quality effort and producing wonderful output is likely to be an A grade on all our team projects. Our video will be so memorable that we will be able to show our friends and family something that we are proud about. Ten years from now a relook at the video we have created will rekindle good memories and we will still laugh while watching this video repeatedly. It is of essence to note that as a group anything less than perfect is unacceptable so that is why our results will be perfect. Task Roles As the group leader, Michael Palazzo will be writing and directing the film. He is the most responsible in the group and as shown through his high GPA. He has many creative and interesting ideas, which he can use to create the overall vision of the video. Additionally, he enjoys writing essays so an outline and script will be no problem for the video. Nada and Ivinne will be doing everything that has to do with technology such as filming and editing, because other members of the group are not fully conversant with technology as compared to these two. Everyone will participant in acting because we will need as many voices as possible for the toys to differentiate between aliens. Free Riders Consequences Our group has a very strict no free rider policy and therefore, it will be unacceptable not to contribute any effort to the project but nevertheless we shall all keep in mind that the effort of each person will not be similar. The main ideals we are focusing on are communication, attendance, and participation. We need effective communication in the group to ensure that everyone can be on the same page since if people do not know what they are supposed to do then they will be unable to do anything constructive. If any group member has poor communication then they are no longer considered part of the group and they would not receive credit for any of the group project assignments. Secondly, attendance is mandatory during the day when filming will take place and no excuses will be accepted for missing that day, since the group will greatly depend on the skills and knowledge of each member. Among the rules during this particular day is that if any member is more than ten minutes tardy they had better have a good excuse and if they are more than thirty minutes tardy they better show up with pizza for everyone. It is expected that everyone will act and shyness would not be acceptable, since it will make the video boring. Everyone just needs to have fun and really get into the characters they portray. If a member does not participate but they still show up and communicate then they will receive a C for all the group assignments. Outcome The outcome resulting from one free rider might not affect the overall project as much, but more than one free rider will mean that other group members will have to put in a lot of extra effort. The outcome for the free riders will be that their grade will be so low so that they might not pass the class. However, as long as the group leader is still alive we will have an excellent outcome from those who participate. Process If there are any free riders, the participating members will send an e-mail to the professor to ensure that the free riders get the C grade as they deserve but they will receive at least one warning through a text from the group leader before this happens. If no response from the free rider is obtained within twelve hours, the e-mail will be sent to the professor. Afterwards, the free-riders will receive the grade they deserve coming straight from the consequences listed earlier. If they respond to the group leader in time and the group leader is feeling generous, he might offer a different remedy. It is important to note that the group leader seemingly enjoys food and most likely he would be lenient to a free rider if he or she offers to buy him lunch or a bunch of snacks. Preferably, none of this process will need to take place because I believe we have a solid team. Respect The main things that the group must respect are through these guidelines. For example, if a member is going to be late, he had better show up with pizza so that group members do not hate him or her. Another example is that a free rider should just buy the group leader lots of food to make him happy or just accept not passing the class. Other than the guidelines, everyone should show mutual respect. That means not being disrespectful to any members of the group unless they really mess up. Members should not get too offended by the things people say if their intention was not negative. Remember we all grew up differently and are used to different things, so adaptation for the project is key. For this project, we are a team of best friends and we will act that way. Other than that, let us have fun getting that A. Read More
