"Comparing the Two Most Popular Bariatric Procedures" is a perfect example of a paper on surgery and rehabilitation. The present trends in the increasing number of bariatric surgeries over the past decade suggest that the percentage of obese individuals is rapidly increasing within the population. The two most common bariatric procedures that performed these days are Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and adjustable gastric lap band surgery. The review under consideration draws a comparison between the two most popular bariatric procedures. Both the operations are aimed at reducing obesity; however, there is a lot of differences in their practice, post-operative care, cost, nature, and results.

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is an invasive operation that involves the division of the stomach into two pouches, and connecting the upper pouch with the small intestine by developing a y-shaped joint and an alternate route for the delivery of food. On the other hand, the laparoscopic insertion of a silicone band around the stomach is relatively less invasive. The patients undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass have to stay in the hospital for 2-3 weeks after the operation, while patients with lap-band are allowed to leave within 1 to 2 days of surgery. However, individuals with lap-band surgery need to visit their doctors more often for optimum adjustment, while individuals undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass do not have to come for adjustment. The percentage of perioperative complications is 9% in the case of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass compared to 5% of lap-band surgery. However, the rate of reoperation is lower in the case of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (16%), when compared with adjustable lap-band surgery (24%). The delicate protocol of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass makes it very costly as compared to lap-band surgery.  The results obtained from data collection are aligned with the clinical significance of both the procedure; Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is several times more efficient than lap-band surgery (Tice et al., 887). Further, it is also reported that there is a great amount of decrease in blood glucose, triglycerides, and cholesterol levels in the blood of individuals who opt for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. When comparing the personal satisfaction of the patients regarding weight loss with respect to their choice for bariatric surgery, it was found that 80% or more people are satisfied with their choice of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, while only 46% of the individuals with lap-ban surgery expressed satisfactory remarks (Tice et al., 889). Another problem with lap-band surgery is that the patients are strictly asked to follow the diet plan recommended by their doctor, while no strict dietary regulation is imposed on individuals undergoing successful Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.
