I would make the client understand that even if the memory was stressful, it was good to release so that he could recover.

The information would help in my therapeutic approach. I would tell the client that he will recover. Informing him that there other veterans who had similar problems, and I assisted them to recover would give him more confidence. Exposure therapy should mainly focus on the revelation. It seems that it was the main trigger for the trauma after the war. I would pay close attention to the disclosure to understand what bothers him most. It is possible to help someone recover from depression if one understands what triggers it.
