"Twelve-Step Program Approach in Addiction" is a perfect example of a paper on addiction. The twelve-step program approach has been associated with most alcoholic and narcotic addiction improvements over the past century. I never thought the number of people suffering from drug addiction was this huge until I was involved in two of their meetings. Recently I attended two online zoom meetings on Alcohol Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and made the following observations:
I attended both meetings early in the morning, hoping that they won't be full by the time I joined. To my surprise, they were filled in minutes. I realized that both meetings overlooked the first step of the program. None of the meeting moderators asked about the members' admission of powerlessness to beat their addiction. We were good to go. The AA meeting had 25 members while the NA meeting ad 20. Both sessions started with opening prayers, then testimonials from a few members who were probably coaches of the fellowships. Later on, the moderators would ask one or two members to give their stories of addiction. The main difference between the two meetings was in the type of counseling offered. The AA side mainly used scriptures, while the NA side was about personal experience and philosophical concepts. We had a preaching session in the AA meeting. None of the members seemed to deviate from the meeting as they were catchy. The coaches also discussed general life issues such as family and school.
In general, the fellowships offered most of the self-improvement tools for beating an addiction. You can't really tell who will benefit from these kinds of programs as addictions are usually hard to overcome—the attitude among the addict's matters when we talk of overcoming. Very few people make it to the end of the tunnel, yet many were in the program. Clinicians will need to make regular follow-ups to better the outcomes.
