Professionalism is an expression of dedication towards one’s profession while maintaining an ethical code of conduct. It is significantly important for professionals of all kinds to have the right attitude which includes softness of tongue, punctuality, flexibility, being considerate, and taking accountability for one’s action at all times. Professionalism also encompasses leadership qualities such as communication skills, decision-making competencies as well as maintaining one’s poise even when facing a difficult situation. Professionalism is an important prerequisite for health care personnel. It is important for a health care provider to be professional at all times, and do not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, religion, and socio-economic status so that he/she can serve the community with honesty and respect. Moreover, health care professional should be emotionally stable to deal with difficult situations and should be empathetic at the same time so that he/she can understand the pain and suffering of the patient. Maintaining patient’s confidentiality and giving them the right to make informed decisions about their treatment is also an essential attribute of a health care professional. I also believe that grooming, attire, and body language of the healthcare provider hold great importance as these are the basic aspects of the visual personality. Finally, I would like to add that professional knowledge and abilities play a vital role in any individual’s success. When a healthcare provider knows possesses adequate professional skills, only then he/she is able to achieve the desired goals and objectives. Such is the importance of professionalism in my chosen profession.

Discuss the greatest challenges you may face in an advanced standing program in the United States? How will you prepare yourself to deal with these challenges?

As I come from a different country, the greatest challenge that I may face is a lack of understanding of the diversity in cultural backgrounds of my peers and patients. It is important for a doctor to have knowledge of the norms and values of co-workers and patients in order to interact with them and develop long-lasting relationships. I recognize that there are situations resulting in moments of awkwardness, due to a lack of clarity of culture. I plan to deal with these challenges by devoting time to understand the cultural values and ethical standards of the new culture I am in. The more I will spend time interacting with people, the more I will learn about my host country. I am already working as an Orthodontic Assistant and doing Observership in Virginia which provides me with a platform to interact with colleagues and patients. I learn something new every day which contributes to my personal and professional development. I also plan to attend training sessions to improve my professional knowledge and to learn how to survive in particular workplace culture. I also plan to expand my social network because I believe that the more I shall bring myself on a collaborative platform with others, the more I shall gain opportunities to expand my communication skills. This is important because I have to cross the language and cultural barriers in the new environment. I believe that with time I will see through the challenges with time.
