"Bipolar Depression: The Real Challenge" is a perfect example of a paper on the disorder. Robert M.A. Hirschfield’s article bipolar depression: the real challenge, is a peer-reviewed journal article published by the European Neuropsyprhamacology in 2004, issue number 14 from page S83 to s88, and provides a refreshing understanding of the bipolar condition (Hirschfeld, 2004).  The real challenge, according to the author is the correct understanding of both the diagnosis and treatment of the bipolar disorder condition.

The paper dwelt on the need for more recognition of the disorder and a clear distinction between bipolar disorder and unipolar disorder. The misdiagnosis of the condition is the focus of the paper, hence the real challenge.  The paper utilizes a number of surveys and studies conducted to lay emphasis on the real situation.

Analysis

Bipolar condition is commonly understood with regards to the diagnosis and treatment, often misdiagnosed as unipolar, this can lead to serious implications on the patients’ health if treated incorrectly. Unlike just mania, the condition consists of recurrent periods of mania and even hyper mania. In society, bipolar conditions affect up to 4% of the population. Such behaviors often impulsive are mistaken to be normal, though the condition is prevalent among patients with depression.

 A 13 question Mood Disorder Questionnaire screening tool is effective in determining a lifetime history of mania or hypomania symptoms.  Equivalently, the tool has been used to estimate the lifetime prevalence of bipolar disorder ((I and II) in the US population. A positive result of 3.7 % underpins the continued overlook of the condition.

Reflection

Personally intrigued by the underlying situation concerning the bipolar condition, the paper illuminates the confusing aspect of bipolar disorder in human beings.  The gist in realizing the typical difference in two conditions normally thought to be similar. Grasping the differences in near similar conditions and the proper diagnosis and treatment of the disorder is the key to a full understanding of the problem.
