In Elgin, a group of high school students led the process towards the achievement of a greener and sustainable city. In Charleston, the community played a key role in ensuring environmental sustainability (Jackson, 2011). The community members launched major attempts including reduced waste disposal into the environment. Business leaders who encouraged the populations and firms to reduce waste disposal to water resources and residential areas also influenced both cities’ environmental programs.

            The leaders of the environmental sustainability programs in the series succeeded in their leadership because they were influential to the city population to care for the environment. In Elgin, they were able to focus the city towards the pursuit of sustainability as a brand. The players were also able to recover the main river in the city (Jackson, 2011). The environmental sustainability program in Elgin succeeded through the creation of parks and revitalization and mass enhancement of buildings.

            On the other hand, the leadership in both cities experienced inadequacies in mobilizing the communities towards long-term environmental sustainability (Jackson, 2011). They were unable to mobilize all the community members to a common force that would work cohesively. The main long-term goals for Elgin and Charleston included reducing waste disposal in residential areas and ensuring clean water-catchment areas through reduced pollution to water sources.

Elgin and Charleston were successful in ensuring better environmental care within the cities. The two cities were also able to secure water-catchment areas from pollution by discouraging the society from disposing wastes into rivers and the lake.

The lessons learned from Charleston and Elgin could benefit many cities within the USA, including Oakland, California. Oakland is built around massive transportation and industrial centers thus, posing a danger to the health of residents (Jackson, 2011). The city’s leadership has been effective, in the modern-day, in putting up measures to reduce the disposal of industrial wastes into the environment and water resources. The leadership in the city needs to mobilize the community, just like Elgin, in order to achieve a common effort towards environmental sustainability.
