Demographic

The composition of the African American in the United States accounts an approximately 11 percent of the total population. This population of African Americans forms the second-largest composition of minority groups. Most of the African Americans are found in the southern states while others are found in the urban areas (Smith, 2011).

Health Care Practices

African Americans have been conscious about their health and they seek medical attention to the health facilities. However, some of the African Americans with limited knowledge of health care practices turn to traditional treatments due to their beliefs. They are reluctant to seek the attention of professional health practitioners and turn to traditional modes of treatment.

Risk behaviors

Due to their mode of living and the environmental factors, African Americans are subjected to health risks. Racial inferiority and abuse are some of the most identified factors that pose risk to their health. The population is also at risk due to limited knowledge and ignorance.

Genetic Susceptibility to Chronic Conditions

African Americans are one of the minority racial groups in the United States and are mostly affected by the cardiovascular disease because of their lifestyle and genetic conditions. The occurrence of this condition is influenced by the fact that the population is affected by racial abuse (Baer & Jones, 1992).

Nutrition

African Americans have poor eating habits and they lack appropriate exercise hence are at risk of developing diseases like obesity, heart disease, and diabetes (Smith, 2011).

Spirituality

African Americans have a strong affiliation to a religion. The practice of religion helps them maintain good health with good health practice (Baer & Jones, 1992).

Death rituals

African Americans are keen to observe a number of life rituals and death rituals are one of the most respected practices. In this community, death is an important part of their culture (Smith, 2011).
