"Major Surface Muscles" is a perfect example of a paper on the musculoskeletal system. The Latissimus Dorsi originates in the ilium, inserts in the humerus, horizontally abducts the shoulder joint, and is exercised by lateral pulldowns. The Biceps Brachii arises in the scapula, inserts in the radius, flexes the elbow, and is exerted by the dumbbell biceps curl. The Triceps Brachii originates in the scapula, inserts in the ulna, extend the elbow, and is used in skull crushers. The Pectoralis Major arises in the clavicle, inserts in the humerus, internally rotates the shoulder joint, and is used in bench presses.

The Anterior Deltoid originates in the clavicle and rotates the shoulder joint internally. The Posterior Deltoid originates in the spinal scapula and rotates the shoulder joint internally. The Medial Deltoid originates from the scapular and abducts the shoulder joint. The three Deltoid muscles insert on the lateral humerus and are exercised by dumbbell raises. The Trapezius originates from the skull, inserts on the clavicle, retract the scapula, and is used in the barbell shrugs. The Rectus Abdominis originates on the pubis, inserts in the costal cartilages depresses the ribs and is used during crunches.

The External Oblique arises from the borders of ribs 5 – 12, inserts on the iliac crest, rotate the spine, and is used in standing side twists. The Rectus Femoris originates in the ilium, inserts in the patella, extend the knee and is exercised by leg extensions. The Gluteus Maximus arises in the ilium, inserts in the greater trochanter, externally rotates the hip, and is used by one-legged cable kickbacks. The Biceps Femoris arises on the ischial tuberosity, inserts in the tibia and fibula, internally rotates the hip, and is used by leg curls.

The Soleus arises in the proximal fibula, inserts on the heel bone are intended for the plantar flexion of the ankle, and is exercised by seated calf raises. The Gastrocnemius originates in the medial femoral condyle, inserts in the heel bone, and is intended for the flexion of the knee. It is exercised by standing calf raises (Hermann, 2000).
