Introduction

Burns has defined leadership as

“the reciprocal process of mobilizing, by persons with certain motives and values, various economic, political, and other resources, in a context of competition and conflict, in order to realize the goals independently or mutually held by both leaders and followers” (Burns, 1978: 425).

Even though there has been a lot of work done in the past to attempt to discover the reasons behind a leader becoming efficient, it is as yet a vague idea that cannot be defined properly (Theofanidis & Dikatpanidou, 2006). When considered in terms of nursing, the fact that has been commonly approved of is that nurse leaders have the ability to influence the degree of motivation which they are able to do so through molding the association’s working environment. This is what, in turn, molds the outlook of the nurses, patients, and relations. There is a requirement of leadership in nursing for there to be an efficient running of everyday functions. However, this cannot be termed as the mere part that nursing leadership plays. Another role of nursing leadership is to know the way visions can be made to be realized (El-Meligi, 2005), which means, the way patients can be provided with a safe climate or the way they can be treated such that they feel respected.

Every nurse administrator attempts to develop accurate prescriptions for care delivery systems that can be capable of providing high-quality and gainful patient results. In explaining what quality of nursing care is it can be said that it is the care that the nurses provide in keeping with the conventional nursing care standards (Grujic, O'Sullivan, & Wehrmacher, 1989). There are several determinants that can be made use of for determining the kind of nursing care that is being provided. Some of such determinants include the availability of nurses and the number in which they are available, the skills of the nurses as well as their know-how, their morale, caring attitude, efficient organization, and contact, resources, effective managerial and administrative systems, and the degree to which the nurses have been educated. It is very much possible that the variables that are thought to be having an influence on the quality of care may not be bringing about results when put into practice. Thus, there is a difference between the theoretical and practical perceptions, and for the determination of the actual variables, there has to be research conducted.

This paper investigates the viewpoints of the nurses in Saudi Arabia regarding the variables that influence the quality of nursing care.

Project Aim

The purpose of this project is to provide background knowledge on leadership in the field of nursing. The project specifically aims to find out about the viewpoints of the nurses in Saudi Arabia regarding the variables that influence the quality of nursing care.

Objectives

1. To determine what the Saudi nurses consider to be quality nursing care.
2. To determine the perceptions of Saudi nurses about the variables that influence the kind of nursing care provided.
3. To determine if the kind of nursing care provided in Saudi Arabia is considered good enough by the nurses.
