Imitation of William Blakes The Tyger - Book Report/Review Example

In expressing the terror of the present missile age, the form of 'The Tyger' best suited my imitative poem. The poem's specific form and the scope for presenting the most pertinent themes of the modern world in the form of certain questions attracted me to the particular style. To speak about the form of the poem, it is comprised of six quatrains in rhymed couplets. "The meter is regular and rhythmic; its hammering beat suggestive of the smithy that is the poem's central image. The simplicity and neat proportions of the poems form perfectly suit its regular structure, in which a string of questions all contribute to the articulation of a single, central idea.

In writing this particular creative assignment, I first comprehended and undertook a profound analysis of the primary text, i.e. the poem by Blake. Then I identified the specific elements of the poem and the most interesting characteristics of its form. Thus, I comprehended that the method of presenting my idea in the form of questions can help me in the creative writing to present some essential themes of the day. I also appreciated the quality of the poetic style of Blake and the neat presentation of his themes and symbols.

Thus, I decided to be brief in presentation and to be exact in details. The selection of modern theme of war and the context of war-like world was due to the important appeal of this specific theme in the current context. I imagined missile as more powerful and greatly dangerous a threat to human existence in comparison with tiger. I was careful to bring about the similarity between the appeal of the original poem and the imitation. Thus, I directly copied the form and style of the poem by Blake and added my idea and theme to it, substituting the original theme by a similar idea.

There have been different challenges all through the writing of this imitative poem and the greatest among them is the difficulty I faced in incorporating the rhyme, meter etc of the original poem. As it required more focused effort, I was not specific about keeping the exact rhyme and meter. Instead, I concentrated on keeping the original style and simplicity in language. I strongly feel that I have kept some of the features of the original text and I have greatly achieved some of the basic qualities of writing a powerful poem.
