The reaction of Jake to others' behavior tells us more about him rather than a direct narration and this is an explicit omission way of depicting a character. The aspect of omission in understanding about the Jake's inability in sex life is that his girl friend tells Jake that she is leaving him as she could never be faithful in their marriage. The above scene tells us about the sexual inability of Jake and is the best context of omission giving insight to the character of Jake. Another aspect of omission that gives the glimpses of Jake's hate and envy towards his inability and others sexual capabilities is his reaction when Cohn confesses his affair with Lady Brett.

He hates Cohn more than Brett though she left him for a wealthy person and this proves that he still loves Brett despite her separation with him. Another important trait in Jake's character the concern for ladies and family comes out in the incident when feels uncomfortable with his friends' Cohn and Bill's activities and thinks that they are pretending to be as nice people, but not. In the above context, the omission is used to explicit the inherent nature of Jake respecting the family of a lady and the aversion of him towards his friends for not obliging confirms that.

The moral centre in the novel is about introducing of Pedro Romero to Brett as Brett is impressed by him and the moral aspect in this matter is Montoya did not want Romero to be influenced by corruption. However, Jake introduces him to his friends along with Brett. The above incident gives an account of Jake's character, which is being influenced by Lady Brett and the other friends. In addition to that he expresses true love for Brett though is not able to marry or satisfy her physically and sexually.

He introduces Romero to Brett and leaves the table as she is madly in love with the bull fighter and wants to marry him or might want to have sex with him. Jake is sexually incapable and cannot satisfy Brett, but he wants to satiate her desires by agreeing to her marriage with a wealthy person and introducing Romero to her even after her engagement with another person. However, in the above incidents Jake fails morally for the sake of friendship and loses Montoya. In the second incident he is hurt by the way Brett treats him after a brief affair as Cohn quarrels with Jake and beats him.

Even after receiving beating from Cohn, he responds to the call from Brett and goes to Madrid to rescue her. This action reflects the love in his mind for her. At last he reaches to conclusion that he might not be happy and sustain relationship with Brett even he is sexually capable enough. The above feeling comes to the mind of Jake as he recognizes that Brett is not honest and stable enough to maintain a healthy relationship. 1Regarding Jake's perception of a specific character the important one is Brett as he is in love with her but cannot marry or engage with her due to his sexual inability.

His initial perception about Brett is sentimental and thinks that he could have been a good partner for Brett if he is sexually capable. He thinks that Brett is engaged with another person just due to the sexual weakness of him. Being involved in that perception, he helps her to engage with Cohn and then with Romero in the fiesta he attends with his friends and Brett. In this context he receives beatings from Cohn and even after that his sentimentality for Brett is
