Offered was separated from her husband, who is named Luke and her child sometime after the formation of the republic and is the official servant to a character called “The Commander”. This character is involved in what is described as a loveless marriage with a fundamentalist woman named Serena Joy who has an extreme dislike of Offred yet has to tolerate her existence owing to the fact that Serena is sterile (Though it may be the case that the commander is the one who is sterile). Throughout the story, the idea of obedience from the handmaids is constantly reinforced with the threat of being sent off to “The Colonies” which is presented as a fate worse than death.

There is an additional handmaid that has formed a friendship with Offred named Ofglen who introduces the protagonist to the resistance movement which seeks to destroy the Republic of Gilead. An additional character named Moira is introduced as an old friend of Offred who had escaped the oppressive society but was later caught and sent to work in a brothel. Offred starts a relationship with a young man named Nick who is a member of the resistance and helps to arrange Offred’s escape yet in what is presumed to be the final stages of the story, Offred notes in her tapes that she is going to be sent off in a to an unknown fate (Presumably death or the colonies).
