The other method that the Bank employs is the environmental footprint. The company regards the footprint of the environment critical in the sustainability of its real estate portfolio.

In order to realize these methods of improving the sustainability of the bank’s real estate portfolio, the bank applies innovation to the maintenance and building of the energy and resource competent buildings. Therefore, the elevated performance by the standard chartered bank has resulted from its investments in energy proficient technologies that are within its buildings, inclusive of the smart lighting, the photovoltaic panels, effective cooling systems and water recycling among others.

Standard chartered approaches the issue of sustainability of the real estate portfolio using four elements that include planet, profit, people and project ((Siemens, 2012).The methods that are employed in improving the sustainability of the real estate portfolio by the bank usually require a number of tools to support the improvements and deliver the major indicators such as access to energy and sanitation. The existing tools and management systems employed currently by the Bank include sustainable foot printing, LEED, BREEAM, and the IPD Environment code.

These are the key assessment tools used by the bank for evaluating sustainable real estate portfolio.
